I'm frightened, my GFR dropped from 48 to 34.
Hello,
I'm back but not with good news. My GFR has dropped from 48 to 34 which is not good at all. Does anyone have any reason for this? Could I have been dehydrated the day of the test??? Another number is high, cis something. Quite high. I don't know if I'm doing something wrong or if this is just my body. I am seeing my nephrologist the in 3 days. HELP!

More things I never knew. Thanks again!
@collegeprof I haven't had bone broth before, but next time I see my dialysis dietician she will be queried about that. It sounds like an interesting way to introduce more protein.
@nscappa It's hard to commit religiously to the renal diet, isn't it? I bet all of us have fudged a bit on the requirements at one time or another. I admit to doing that, but really try to keep it in check. For me, eating something on the no-no list is so appealing, and then when I do eat it, is is not as tasty as imagined! Go figure.

UPDATE: Good news. I guess I should stay away from my chart levels because my GFR was not 34, it was still 48. I think I saw a 3.4 level and there you go. He was pleased with all of my results including my BP. He is such a sweetheart and guess what, I don't need to see him for one year as long as my urine analysis comes back good. I promised that I would update you and thank all of you for your kindness. Nancy : )
I can't speak with any authority about your number drop. I have been hovering on the cusp of stage three and four for five years when I was diagnosed with CKD. I can tell you about water drinking. I do like cold drinks but I like my water room temperature. I drink a minimum of five 23.7oz bottles of water every day (that's 118.5oz). I have six cases delivered by Arrowhead each month. I should tell you that I live in Phoenix where the tap water tastes like a swimming pool and you never leave your house without water because of the heat and dryness (it's 107 today). The amount of water I drink may seem excessive, but I always drank quite a bit of water before Phoenix and CKD.
Wow, that's a lot of water. Is it safe to drink this much I have read that you can actually hurt yourself with too much water. I got results today and I was wrong, I must have read a level incorrectly because my doctor told me that my GFR was still 48 (thank God). It seems that all of my numbers look good and I will see him in one year as long as my urine is fine. I am still upping my water intake as close to 64 ounces as possible. I appreciate your post and thank you. Take care. : )
You are correct drinking too much water in too short of time can give you a condition called hyponatremia, but that usually happens when you drink a large amount of water in a short time I drink mine over 24 hour. Including when I get up at night (I’m 73). I have been in Arizona for 26 years and have drank quite a bit of water the entire time. That said, early next week I have my quarterly appointment with my nephrologist at Mayo. They do the whole shebang blood & urine. I’ll let you know what they tell me.
I hope I didn't offend you by what I said but now that you have explained yourself I understand better. BTW, I will be 77 on September 2nd, wow! I hope you have great results from your checkup. Take care. : )
You did not offend me at all. The whole purpose of this blog is to hear other peoples opinions and ideas and questions. I suspect no one would be here if they weren't dealing with serious health issues. On this blog we support each other. We're all good..........................
It is with much interest that I read comments that are entered either before or after a physician appointment. It seems each of us have different advice at differing times in our journey. I had kidney removed in January and have stage 3A CKD. My GFR was 38 just after surgery and moved to 40 four months after surgery. My last appointment with my nephrologist, I proudly reported to her that I was drinking about 90-96 oz. Of water per day. She said “Why are you drinking so much water, you must be peeing all night!” “Drink when you are thirsty, you will be fine.” It is hard to relax when you have many things wrong, I just try to do my best and not worry so much. Easy to say, hard to practice. Blessings.
@doug19 It's interesting that she said to "drink when thirsty" The experts I have read said by the time you are feeling thirsty, you are well on your way to being dehydrated! Not good on your remaining kidney nor your body in general, in my humble opinion.
Being hydrated is critical to our body, and all the systems we have to hold together. Now I am on a new dialysis protocol, I am drinking more good fluids each day, and it has paid off. While I love my crushed ice-and-water first thing in the morning, it is a welcome drink all day long. Sometimes I add a packet of Taste of Lemon or Lime or Orange. But rarely do I go for a sugar-free drink additive. If I have been outside working, I might slug down a 12 oz. Gatorade to rehydrate before taking a short rest.
Good for you, do your best, not worry too much. Be gentle on yourself!
