I'm frightened, my GFR dropped from 48 to 34.
Hello,
I'm back but not with good news. My GFR has dropped from 48 to 34 which is not good at all. Does anyone have any reason for this? Could I have been dehydrated the day of the test??? Another number is high, cis something. Quite high. I don't know if I'm doing something wrong or if this is just my body. I am seeing my nephrologist the in 3 days. HELP!

@nscappa At the time of your test, were you experiencing dehydration, or any infection [sinus, cold, skin, tooth, etc.]?
As you know, we look at trends not always a single lab report. Take a wander in your memory and see if there was "something amiss" that day. Write down your concerns and speak to your doctor when you see them in 3 days! For today, deep breath, and relax, okay?
And let me know what they say!

Hello My Mayo Friend,
Actually, I have been looking at the trends and they help me. Some are very consistent and I have been thinking and I am not drinking enough water (not as much as I should). My doctor told me to drink 64 ozs. daily and I don't think I have been doing that much. Sometimes my urine is a bit more yellow which I know isn't a good sign showing me that I need more water. I am also cutting out my 2nd cup of coffee or only have a 2nd cup occasionally. That drop really scared me, also my toes are a bit numb, and I get itchy some days. I will give him a urine sample Thursday and I know he will go over every bit of info and probably break my hand when he shakes it. : ) Thank you so much for getting back to me so quickly. I can always count on you so thank you again. I will update Thursday's comments.
My GFR has been dropping since 2014. It went from 60+ and is now 24. In those 10 years it went up and down, I'm speaking of eGFR based on creatinine. My Cystatin C GFR is 32. Do you have proteinuria? Is protein spilling into the urine? I just had my Mayo Clinic appointment with my Nephrologist on July 18th. Things are stable. I must maintain a low protein, low salt diet drinking lots of water and exercising. I'm not a complete vegetarian, but pretty close. My Nephrologist at Mayo stressed the Mediterranean diet. I don't eat processed meat, no beef. My disease is interstitial nephritis. It's important to understand your disease specifically and what's causing the decline. There's really nothing else to do. Live healthy.
Thank you so much for your info. I am watching my trending numbers and I understand most of them. Re diet, I eat a lot of cabbage, some eggs, zucchini, eggplant, some chicken and fish and I watch my salt religiously. I do drink coffee in the morning and I might stop my second cup in the afternoon. The only thing that I don't do is exercise. I have depression and I really have to push myself which isn't very easy. I do think that my low numbers might be because I haven't been drinking the 64 oz. of water that my nephrologist wants me to drink. My toes are a bit numb as of the last two weeks. I will go over all of these things (I will have a urine sample for him too). I don't know too much about the conditions that you mentioned but I will know more Thursday. I'm sorry that you are having issues, that must be very difficult for you and I wish you the best. Again, thank you so much for your comments I really appreciate that. : )
I’ve been experiencing declining GFR for 10 years.
If your doctor recommends water intake, it is vitally important. It might feel as if something so commonplace and inexpensive couldn’t possibly matter a lot, but it truly does.
Find ways to make water appealing to you. A few of my tricks…
I bought 2 really pretty and functional insulated water tumblers.
My inside tumbler is filled with ice water at bedtime. I sip on it if I get up in the night and it’s ready for me upon waking in the morning. I find it easy now to get my first 16 ounces in before my morning 1 cup of coffee. When I walk (everyday) in my neighborhood, this tumbler goes with me.
My to-go tumbler fits in my car cup holder perfectly. I never leave the house without a full tumbler, no matter how quick the trip, and it has to be empty before I return home.
I often add a squeeze of lemon or lime juice or a splash of cranberry juice in my water for something a bit more interesting.
Sometimes when I’m traveling I hesitate to spend $6 on a bottle of water….then I realize I, and my kidneys, are worth it. 🤗
I just love your post and all the things you do so diligently. Re water I know I haven't been drinking enough of late so yesterday I started drinking the recommended 64 oz. minus 4 ozs. : ) I too have purchased 20 oz. tumblers with pretty phrases and funny one too. I have about 5 of them but I only use 3 at a time. They keep the water nice and cool/cold whichever way I want it. It's easier to drink the water when it's not too cold so I can drink more. I should have known better about the water intake, but I got a bit lazy so I'm back to my 60 oz. a day not including a cup of coffee. I should buy some watermelon and cantaloup next time I go shopping. I have no car anymore so we have a bus that takes us every two weeks. I'm rambling. Again, thank you so much for your informative post, I truly appreciate it. Take care, Nancy : )
I, too, am a long term survivor of CKD. I believed that drinking water all day was boring until I switched to crushed ice and water for part of the day based on @gingerw response one time. I switched to chicken bone broth from Costco and mix that with Swanson chicken broth from Amazon. Both have very low sodium so I add a little garlic herb and lots of onion powder for a portion of my daily liquid consumption. I top that off with a can of Sprite Diet Zero, again low sodium. Later, for desert, a couple of diet popsicles makes for a good treat along with Luigi Cherry Lemon Ice on occasion. My dietitian and Nephrologist want liquid during the day with some exercise. Water alone throughout the day for me is quite boring!
Thank you for your information. Do you ever binge? Eating a kidney diet can get quite boring and I really don't like to cook. I food shop every two weeks so I allow myself to binge for maybe two days, mostly ice cream and then I get back on track. I love water so that's not a problem for me and I'm up to the 60 ounces that my Nephrologist recommended. I do watch my sodium carefully and I don't eat red meat but I do eat chicken and some fish. I'm hoping that my drop from 48 to 34 is because of the lack of enough water. One of my numbers (not sure which one it was) is very high. I see my doctor tomorrow so I will get the scoop from him. Take care!
collegeprof, this is interesting. I follow a low protein diet, very little meat. I wonder if kidneys can process liquid bone broth better. I want to start drinking bone broth, very healthy. I don't have proteinuria as my protein levels are low. I get most from dairy and beans and rice, nuts, etc.

@mrainne There are 9 grams of protein in 8oz of Costco Chicken Bone Broth with 95 mg of sodium with no potassium. I mix it with Swanson Chicken broth with very little sodium and potassium. It's a nice way to get the extra protein with some sodium, which we all need anyways. At any event, always talk with your dietitian first to insure it is a right fit for you.
