airway inflamtion and steriods
Hi everyone,
People who have asthma often use steroids to ease the inflamed airways and asthma symptoms.
I am wondering what people who have bronchiectasis but without asthma do if their airways are inflamed? Do their airways get inflamed often even without asthma?
Thanks!

I probably do have inflamed airways...and do have some asthma...but am not currently doing anything. However I have been meaning to start taking the tumeric powder I bought last year
for this reason.. must start that at least.
I hope tumeric helps you, but I have been taking tumeric for years. I doesn't do anything to my airways.

Oh that's a shame...would have thought it was a systemic treatment.
Ah, if you don't do anything, does it affect your physical activities, like fast walking? And do you feel heart beating fast because of the inflamed airways?
Take care!

Actually, turmeric does have an anti-inflammatory effect within the body, including the lungs.
The problem is, that as a supplement and long-used ayurvedic medication, it has not necessarily been quantitatively studied for its effect on specific organs or ailments.
While I primarily use it for osteoarthritis & muscle pain, I have noticed that I need to use my Symbicort (combo LABA/ICS) inhaler less, and my budosenide nebs not at all, as long as I take 900-1000 mg of curcumin daily. The next month will be a great test - because I have 2 surgeries coming up, I must stop the curcumin because it also has anticoagulant properties. We'll see how my joints & lungs fare!
I am glad it works for you, Sue. I also have been taking turmeric mainly for my joints for years. I associate it with ginger, it probably does no harm. I would like to know how your body reacts when you stop it.
Best luck with your surgeries.

I need to do more cardio...I do occasionally bushwalk and walking up hills makes everything harder, can't talk etc...but I feel it is very good for my lungs, and I like to do it. Last year at Rottnest Island I noticed a big deterioration in my capacity for bike riding on the hills there...was quite shocked. I assumed it was from the Bronchiectasis, but I need to check that it wasn't my asthma...maybe take some Ventolin prior to the exercise?
Maybe the tumeric (curcumen) is actually helping you without your being aware, if you have been taking it long term?
That is interesting to hear, Sue. I have to remember to take it! A month or two back, I accidently went without taking my pills (just hrt, antidepressant and a bunch of supplements) for a few days and then decided I was OVER taking them, so simply stopped. I am not recommending that to anyone, as I know you are meant to wean off, but part of me is reluctant to start anything again, as it is so liberating not to be taking anything! 😊
Best of luck with your surgeries too.
Yes, I would be interested on a follow up on that after the surgeries also.
