I have a rare Primary Immune Deficiency and am considered immune compromised plus have long Covid. My husband and I both wear either an N95 mask or an anti-viral mask treated with metal ions that inactivate and destroy pathogens whenever we go any place. My life is not worth the risk. We have stopped eating inside restaurants and are careful for my sake.
I knew a couple where the husband was taking cancer treatments and was immune compromised. They took no precautions and both ended up with Covid last summer. She survived, but he passed away.
In the Primary Immune Deficiency community, we have learned the benefits of mask wearing before Covid came around. We isolate or wear the appropriate mask to guard our health.
Be very careful with the decisions that you make concerning your health, especially in the light of Covid still being around and taking lives. I don’t mean to scare anyone, but if you are already suffering from long haul covid, catching Covid again or other viruses is likely to make things worse.
Personally, I feel spouses need to take the same precautions as the person whose immune health is questionable.

I would suggest everyone, vaccinated or not, take Paxlovid if you contract Covid. I know some people have a reaction to it, but I think it is worth the risk.

I have never understood why antivirals have not been more widely advocated through this whole thing.
Antivirals were the salvation for people with HIV. I think it may work out that way with Covid as well. The virus is not being stopped. All avenues need to be used to help people.

I wish to God Paxlovid had been available for me when I got the virus.

Alas, not all of us can. My spouse tested positive first in March 2023; our PCP prescribed Paxlovid for us both, assuming I'd test positive too. I did, 2 days later. Spouse took Pax w/o problems. I had such a severe bad reaction to the first dose, I was told to stop immediately.

It's like any drug - it may work (and it did for spouse and others) and not all of us can.

The uptick in numbers are concerning: the heat dome over much of the US is causing people to stay inside with windows closed and a/c on. Interestingly, the NATO anniversary event is taking place in DC where I live. to the best of my knowledge, masks are not required. What a possibility for all those working in hotels and at the convention center to get COVID and then have all those (delegates, staff, press) from so many countries take it on planes with them. No, I'm not predicting a super-spreader. I'm stating what medical organizations are cautioning about a spread this summer and that being a possibility. The DC temps have been in the 90s for weeks and are predicted to remain so. It's humid. No one wants to be outside unless they must be.

Very very concerning !!!! I am sorry that you had a bad reaction. What happened? COVID is blowing up in Florida and many other places. I know several people who have it now . I totally hear what you’re saying . It’s brutally hot here too. I believe a worldly event like that could definitely cause a super spreader. The problem is that this illness is different in everybody . In my opinion that is definitely a reason to be concerned.

My reaction, @skullbasecancer4, was what I imagine it is like to be on "speed" - my heart raced out of my chest or so it felt, I couldn't slow down, rest or sleep. It began within an hour or taking the first dose and w/ the advice to rest, I could not. It took more than 24 hours to work itself out of my system and I was exhausted from that on top of COVID.

Superspreader: lots of Summer weddings, travel, etc., and yes, hearing of many more testing positive if testing at all. Too many are getting sick and posting they have colds, etc., but refuse to test.

Ugh. That’s awful. I have terrible anxiety to begin with . I am so scared of getting Covid , because I have not had it . I feel most vulnerable, My husband can bring it home from work etc …….Everyone says it’s just a cold …… I currently know several people who have it and have really bad flu symptoms. Stay safe and well.

Thank you. We continue to do what we did. Alas, sometimes for work one must manage otherwise. Do all you can to not get it esp with so many staying in bec of the heat.

I think you can get another Covid vaccine now, if I have read all of your posts properly.

I take some heavy-duty immunosuppressant medications. I masked vigilantly until I got the most recent vaccine this past April. Since the nicer weather, I haven't masked-- here in Pennsylvania.

I don't mean to cross any personal lines with the next comments. They are just some possibilities. Maybe you could talk to a therapist? Not because you are afraid of Covid- I agree with you that sick people need to be more careful than healthy folks! It seems that maybe you and your husband could benefit from some talking to each other with a mediator to help the conversation along. Are you afraid of Covid or of his passing away? Maybe he would be more willing to wear a mask if he understood your fear? I don't know; I'm just guessing at things here. Maybe you two could try to coordinate your different levels of risk-acceptance and risk-avoidance?

Wishing you blessings!
