How do I get thru spine surgery recovery? I need people to talk to

Posted by denman55 @denman55, Jun 1 8:57am

I just had 2 back surgeries, I'm home recovering, but it's slow and difficult. I'm in pain and uncomfortable, bored, have many tearful days and nights, am trying to hold it together, but really think I need people to talk to, share with, and I need support right now and hope there are a few people out there who can help me get thru this. I am a male, age 69, and I just had 2 spine surgeries. Thank you for your kindness.

@captboat

I was 68 and had a lumbar fusion L3-L5. Had been very athletic most of my life playing basketball and then racquetball.
The best advice my doctor gave me was to walk a mile everyday. When you are able to. I’m 80 now and regret not following his instructions. When you are able walk a mile every day, you will never regret it. God bless you.

Hello there sir,
I can absolutely identify with what you are going through.
June 29th, 2023 I had an emergency 3 level fusion from C3-C6. Surgery went fabulous, so did recovery & rehab until 9 weeks post-op when I aggravated previously fused areas in my lumbar spine. Fast forward to January 23rd and 25th of 2024 and I am rewarded with a lumbar reconstruction from L2-Pelvis. I say pelvis because there are 5½" screws supporting the whole "rocket ship" of titanium that was installed. Believe it or not, exactly the same thing happened at the 9 week mark of rehab, this time 2 herniations in my thoracic and my C6-C7 disc is strangling my spinal cord.
I am scheduled to have that incorporated into the mass above it in August. Yes, that will be major spinal fusions every 6 months or so for 18 months and a major thoracic issue still in the wind.
I know what you mean when you say it brings up all kinds of feelings.
By the way, I'm 49 years old and had to file for SSDI because I was told in no uncertain terms that my days of working are over.
If you would like to talk, I am available.
The one thing that CAN NOT be taken from me is my Positive Mental Attitude. Adjusting my PMA as necessary to maintain a positive outlook on whats happening to me has gotten me through.

I feel for you ~
I had lumbar surgery & had a less than empathetic husband who left me alone 8 or more hours a day! Had to walk tiny steps with a walker just to use the rest room very carefully.
That husband is now an EX, because he said “he didn’t sign up to take care of a disabled person” so I was alone as well. so I feel your pain.
We can send messages back & forth on here or if there’s a way to talk by email or something. I’d be happy to help
