Shingrix and AFIB

Posted by saganjames @saganjames, Feb 1, 2023

I am 78 years old and about 8 months ago I had heart valve repair and an ablation. The ablation has fixed my afib. I am thinking about getting a second shingles shot, shingrix. Does anyone know if getting the shingrix shot can cause Afib to come back or be initiated?

I got the Shingrix vaccine yesterday (6/28/2024) and this morning I am in AFib. I take a medication to stay out of AFib and that works pretty good but when I get sick there is a good chance I will slip back into it. I am wondering if the vaccine could have caused that as they told me i might feel like i have cold/flu like symptoms after the vaccine.

Any illness can possibly stress you enough to have an Afib event. The illness itself can cause the stress and most likely the stress from a vaccine might be enough; after all the purpose of the vaccine is to kick start your immune system. That is a stressful event. My wife goy shingles after getting a flu shot.
I think the question is do you convert back to sinus in a few hours or a day?

Absolutely agree-I was just stating that it kicked me in to AFib. I stayed in AFib most of the day Saturday and went back into sinus around 4pm that afternoon. I just was not expecting that effect from the vaccine; but I do know anytime I am sick I am at risk of going in to AFib.

mRNA is found in many vaccines. Non-compatible to cardiac issues?

I am a person who got atrial flutter last October. . Not sure what caused it. I had a cardioversion to stop it, which was successful and now am taking apixiban and metoprolol to help my heart health. When I got my Covid vaccine in March. I had palpitations for about four days following that and then went back into normal rhythm. I had my pneumonia vaccine last week and I had palpitations for a day and then went back into normal rhythm. The cardiologist told me that anytime my immune system gets stressed, either by vaccine or getting sick, Abnormal rhythm is a possibility. He predicted I would go back into normal beats and rhythm, but to let him know if I don’t. I think the metoprolol is helping keeping my heart rate more regular. Good luck, I had my shingles vaccine five years ago so at least that’s under my belt. I know how you feel though, anxious thoughts, about should I or shouldn’t I get the vaccines.

I'll definitely get the second when it is time (2 to 6 months) but I will make sure I am well hydrated before I take it and that everything is as good as it can be to hopefully avoid this.

I had foot surgery in March and the next morning was in the ER being diagnosed with AFib for the first time (a few days later came down with Shingles, even after having the Shingrix vaccine.) I guess stress to the immune system can lead to a lot of reactions (more likely when older I’m guessing, since never had this happen when I was younger and under stress.) I’m now on Eliquis & Metropolol…with a consult for The Watchman procedure in August (due to fall risk & the need for NSAIDs when treating my Psoriatic Arthritis.)
