Experiences with amitriptyline (the old Elavil)
I told my Dr. I wasn't a fan of Cymbalta's side effects so he suggested amitriptyline for my nerve pain in back, hip and leg. Does anyone have any experiences?

Sometimes the 'old drugs' are so useful in their 'other' applications. Many years ago, I was tried on this. It was very helpful for pain but I developed a dry mouth and drowsiness.
But not everyone gets the same side effects- nor at the same level of discomfort.
Hoping for the best for you.
I have been taking Amitriptyline for over thirty years and it gave me my life back. I have a spinal cord injury and had severe pain, which caused me to have very little sleep. I started on half a pill and slowly worked up. I was then able to have a good night's sleep and my pain was easier to cope with.
That awesome! may I ask what type of pain? I have the old lower back and hip, right side, and also down the back of the right thigh. My main issue is walking more than 50 yards and I have difficult pain. For all that I've gone through ovver the last 5 years but the last 3 months specificaaly, sleep for 90% of that time has been ok. Has there been any specific side effects? I woory about headaches, as I can be prone to them.
From my spinal cord injury my pain is nerve pain. The Amitriptyline gives me a good nights sleep, which enables me to cope with the day. I am only able to walk a very short distance. The side effects for me are dry mouth and eyes. It hasn't given me headaches. I hope your next five years are better than your last five years have been.
@dougs72. what type of side effects do you have with Cymbalta? and what is the dosage? and what other meds are you taking? you really don't need to say. because sometimes different meds can interact negatively. i myself take 120 mg of Cymbalta per day. for depression and pain. but no negative side effects that i've noticed.
my mother used to take Elavil back in the 60s - 80's i believe. it helped her immensely. but after she had back surgery, they took her off of it. which i believe was a bad mistake. only my opinion. and remember different combos of meds might cause headaches. not only just one. you gotta become your own guinea pig to find out what works best for you. d 🏳️🌈
Took 10mg for yrs to help L4 damaged nerve pain. Tried noritryptline 25 mg for better relief and got tachycardia. Went back to 10mg amitry. And it started causing tachycardia. Also thyroid results went bad from noritryp. and had to rebalanced thyroid meds. We are all different and side effects hit some of us more than others.
