Contemplating NOT having suggested gallbladder surgery!
It is interesting reading the experience of others. I must remind myself we all are of "unknown" reliability. However, here goes: It has been suggested I have gallbladder removal due to surprising symptoms (attack?) that started 5 months ago: tremendous tightness in upper right quadrant, no warnings, "almost" some shortness of breath and vague pressure traveling upward in back/chest/arms (hard to describe), brief cold sweat. Distressing but not SUPER painful. I have only had a few of these "big" episodes; maybe weekly I have a milder version of the above. Ultrasound showed gallstones. I AM ADAMANT about trying not to lose this organ. I just had 3 elective surgeries in 3 years - all successful (2 total knee replacements and 1 dental bridge). I have always been quite healthy and will go to extremes to avoid surgery. Sorry, I am leary of doctors. I am seeking a great gastroenterologist or alternative medicine Dr. as I am determined to not follow doctors' advice. I have read about gallstones that can cause fatal damage if they pass into pancreas, etc. But I am trying to figure out how to manage. Have discovered smaller meals seem to help, choosing proper foods for this condition, eating slower (I think). But, I still cannot predict when an attack will occur. I am fearful of infections because of my 2 knee replacements. I do not get infections actually; am quite healthy, very active physically, intellectually engaged in volunteer projects and teaching. So far I REFUSE TO CONSIDER SURGERY. Please do not stereotype me when I reveal chronological age (78 yr. old female). I consider myself more like 60-65. My attitude is one of shock and annoyance that this problem arose and that surgery has (possibly) been suggested. People say "it is easy"; not a big deal. Shall I wait for more disturbing symptoms? See if I can handle this myself? Get multiple opinions? Thank you for your comments (I realize there is no definite answer.)

Gallbladder sludge is the number one cause of acute pancreatitis. It actually caused me to have pancreatic atrophy. So my pancreas is no longer functional and I have to take enzymes derived from pigs every time I eat. Since I don't consume alcohol my gall bladder caused this. My doctor says that I've probably had pancreatitis many times. I recently had an ERCP done to do biopsies on my pancreas. Because gall bladder disease makes a person more likely to develop pancreatic cancer. All were good thank goodness but I'd had gall bladder disease and didn't know it probably for years. Pancreatitis just makes you ill. I always felt like I was fighting something just to rebound and then get ill again. I'd had gall bladder pain but they didn't know why because it was never found on a regular ultrasound. With that said I'm going to have my gall bladder removed in two days. I can't wait because I now know the root of many of my unexplained trips to the ER. I'm tired of being in pain and being sick. I don't have weight problems. I only eat food I prepare. I don't eat a lot of fat but I used to love the chocolate and my desert. I still have it but instead of chocolate cake it's fat free orange sherbet. Good luck to you. You can Google anything. I do a ton of research before I have anything done. I perfectly at peace with my decision and completely trust my doctor.

6 ReactionsThank you so much for sharing. I hope your surgery goes easily and smoothly, and this relieves your pancreatic symptoms. I have decided, after much googling and sitting with myself, to go forward with my surgery on Wednesday. I have implicit trust in my surgeon too. Trusting all will be well.

1 ReactionI was hospitalized at least 5 times for pancreatitis until they did the gallbladder removal....I was always complaining of left-sided stomach pains = but way back when this started at least 40 years ago pancreatitis was not an "in thing" like it became in the last 10-20 years. The gastroenterologist that saw me in the hospital recommended that I see him to do ERCP, exactly what you had, but I felt better, so stupidly I never went back...This has been over 5 years now, however, I seem to have a "pinching" pain on my left side, not constant and not unbearable....I was tired of being hospitalized (last year was 2018) over 5 times so I just lay here in my bed because other illnesses and very low income cause that that's my life from 2019 on.....I hope and pray that someday I will be able to have my disabled son "fixed" and he can bring an income in for us......he has been out of work and out of pay since 2014....well, i want to leave on a more pleasant note saying I hope all of you, especially msmeinik are well and happy.....and hoping all troubles are gone!

1 ReactionOur surgery is a day apart! I'll be back as mine is today with an update on my progress. Good luck to wisewoman10.
Good luck tomorrow. Mine is today.
Thank you! We are a day apart. Mine is today. I appreciate the kind words. That's why I like this Mayo clinic program. It allows us to be cheerleader's for each other. Sometimes a bit of support goes a long way. Especially from those that are experiencing the same thing.

3 ReactionsGood luck to you as well! I hope everything goes smooth and easy. I actually had to cancel my surgery because I just learned that my brother (my only sib) is hospitalized in Virginia for a serious infection in his spinal column. He has many risk factors, and his wife is scheduled for back surgery on Thursday. I am the least urgent/emergent one in the family, so I will postpone to allow time for me to go help care for them. Not worried about a delay, as my original post was a curiosity as to whether my surgery would be premature with only one gall bladder attack! I know this is something I will have to deal with, and perhaps sooner than later, but all things being relative, I need to help the family right now.
