Phlegm in my throat and post nasal drip after Covid
Ever since I had covid in January of 2022 I recovered from the virus but I was left with a constant phlegm in the back of my throat and post nasal drip that will not go away. The feeling of having mucus in the back of my throat actually gets worse when I try to get rid of it by coughing. I have been given steroid inhalers, albuterol, allergy medication, but none of these work. The mucus gets worse especially after I eat. I've never felt like this before and it all started after covid. Can anybody relate to what I am going through?

Thank you and I’ll do the same!
Interesting, I have suffered with this for over two years. I started changing out things like toothpaste, stopping drinking my fav bourbon, and finally the type of coffee I drink. Lo and behold my symptoms have all but disappeared. I was fine before Covid shots. Don’t know if my body now considers some of the above as allergens. I’m just so pleased the heavy phlegm is gone. I also found that delta 9 brings it all back. I was taking that as a sleep aid. I know the above sounds simplistic- it was driven by total frustration that nothing was working. Just an fyi to this group.
So happy to hear that the cromolyn nasal spray recommendation put you on this track. I will now follow your lead and try the Cromolyn oral solution. I am currently still using the nasal spray as well as Claritin and Zantac 360 for H1 and H2 blockade. I will change to Zyrtec which is a stronger H1 blocker. Phlegm symptoms have improved but still present. My phlegm is also much worse after eating so I eat a very small breakfast and lunch so I can make it through the day talking to patients. I will also see an allergist. I have seen a long covid specialist with pulm background who also had not heard of this phlegm issue after covid.
You may find this article interesting which connects long covid with mast cell activation.

I hope I have the same 80% improvement you have experienced and we can all get back to just enjoying life.

I keep hoping! I still find Benadryl works best. The allergy provider said just take another Zyrtec if you need to. I find it interesting the NIH article suggests 4x the typical dosage. I’ll talk to her about that too.
I was initially advised to take 4x the typical dose of Zyrtec, but found that I became extremely drowsy. I am instead taking the same dosage of Xyzal with good effect. Minor fatigue, but manageable.
I too have had drainage, tons of clear mucus, and chronic coughing.
GP gave me omeprazole for GERD, then my Allergist gave me nose sprays for drainage, and worked with my pulmonologist to give me injections for chronic asthma due to post covid.
I have been out of the hospital since January 2022 and still have the chronic cough, and abundant of clear mucus, my husband saw some research out of Chicago done with post covid and the larynx.
We did some more research on our own and found more information. I’ve attached the files below.
I do believe I have this problem and hopefully through my doctors at Banner Health this can researched and can find someone to help relieve it.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience🙏.
That makes sense. After you posted I too got Xyzal and it’s 5 mg of levocetirizine v. 10 mg ceterizine in Zyrtec. I didn’t get drowsy with Zyrtec but I do find that different formulations are worth trying to find just the right one. And what appears to be a smaller dosage always seems like a good thing too!
I’d really think about talking to your Dr and considering the oral Cromolyn Sodium solution. I am so happy with the results.
Mucus mucus mucus. Following Covid, mucus has been a constant issue. Ranging from major post nasal drip to feeling like mucus was dragging behind my eyeballs and now constant phlegm in throat. I also have some deafness in one ear and Tinnitus. What a drag.
