Constant coughing

Posted by karen10225 @karen10225, Jun 1 1:11pm

Is there any way that works to tame the constant and sometimes violent coughing? I know we have to cough to get out whatever is coming up, but sometimes I just need a break. The cough is beginning to increase my anxiety and depression!

Hi @1fancydancer . I agree with the exercise routine...I have a similar regime, a minimum 4 miles a day, up to 7 mi.

What I am very interested in is specifically what antibiotic was prescribed to eradicate the pseudomona infection in 2012? Any help/information would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks again.

Levinquin. Took 90 days to clear it up. Not sure of the dosage but pretty sure it was a high dose for the 90 days. The other times I had Pseudomonus, Levinquin was not listed as a drug that would clear it. Then I used inhaled Tobi.

Regarding all the above comments about bringing up a substance all day and removing it from the throat...I also can relate to all that. My confusion ,,,,,not definitively knowing if it is the mucus related to BE ....or....is it possibly a combination of phglem, saliva, bile etc. etc. As I have mentioned in the blog, I have a hiatal hernia (causing similar and same problems as acid reflux without regurgitation of food or heartburn)) which could also be a reason for the need to clear the throat all day.

Do any of you who need to clear the supposed mucus all day have either acid reflux or a hiatal hernia?

Hi,
Last September I had Covid and an influenza in November. I kept coughing and spitting phlegm more and more. While in Florida, I was hospitalize in Florida for 3 days and they put me on intravenous antibiotics for 2 days thinking I had a multi focal pneumonia but the pneumologist said I didn’t have a pneumonia. I was coughing so much and spitting phlegm white sputum. They didn’t know if it wasn’t Gerd. That was in April then we came to Canada where my lung doctor took over. He did a broncoscopy and it is much better. We are waiting for the lab result. Because I’m still coughing he will do a gastroscope to find out if the bile or bacteria create that phlegm. It is about 60% better but we need the result. I will keep you posted.

To Nick 52 Thank you for reading my post. Interesting " he will do a gastroscope to find out if the bile or bacteria create that phlegm." I have wondered if there is a way, a test, to test the substance to know what it is....to tell if it is bile, bacteria etc. Thank you for your reply and that you will keep me posted.
I am trying to understand the full difference between a colonoscopy and a gastroscope. I had not heard of a gastroscope. What I have had is a colonoscopy two times. The first one did not state I had a Hiatal Hernia (8/2022) and on a scale of 1 to 10 I was told my colon condition etc. was a 9 and that they hardly ever see a test result so good. The second one (10/2023) indicated a small Hiatal Hernia. Wonder if it was so small, the hiatal hernia, the first time that it could have been missed.????
I look forward to knowing how well it all goes for you and the results.

I think she said she took Levaquin for 90 days in 2012. She said she got rid of it. 90 days is a long time!

@irenea8 Thank you ...Yes...she did get back with that information. 90 days on a fluoroquinolone sort of concerns me. It seems that many on this site use that class of antibiotics and have no issues.

Yes it surprises me that people do ok on them but perhaps they are younger in age? Also quite a few people have said Levo or Cipro did NOT work for them. So who knows.

Thank you. Was it Levofloxacin or Cipro? I'm still not cleared from the bacteria yet.

Yes, I also have a Hiatal Hernia and GERD.
Have just increased medication for GERD and it has reduced reflux but still coughing.

Hello Meg2024
I just had a visit with the pulmonologist who ordered anti biotics for me in hopes of helping me with the MAI infection that has been showing in the sputum tests. I am of the understnding that the anti biotics could help with my constant need to clear my throat of mucus etc. I am looking forward to seeing if the anti-biotics do help with that constant need to clear my throat of the mucus that comes up all on its own and causes that need to clear my throat. Probably hard to know if this constant need to clear the throat is due to the BE, the infection, the Hiatal Hernia.....or both or all. Due to the Oct. 2023 NJH test results for acid reflux....I don't have it. However at night sometimes have a burning tongue. Overall I do not have other symptoms that might be related to acid reflux. Glad to hear you have had a reduction in reflux.
