Rash around the stoma
Has anyone or does anyone have a rash around their stoma and what have or had you done to make it better or go away? I have a rash that will not go away and have tried several different things with no success in getting rid of the rash. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

I am using a one piece disposal pouch. I think changing the wafer and cleaning the area every time helps. I found with the other I was constantly itching and burning under the wafer. I usually only have to change it twice or three times a day Hope it helps
I had a similar issue and tried the 'systems' of 3 different manufacturers before I found one where the adhesive used on the barrier did not cause my skin to break down. I had a specialist Ostomy nurse at the hospital who helped me through this process. Can you find such a specialist amongst your team to help you out with this?
@patsyh, welcome. Helpful tips, thank you. May I ask what type of ostomy you have? I look forward to learning more about you and from you?
Hi Colleen,
I had APR surgery this past November, and have been learning how to live with an ileostomy for seven months now. Prior to surgery I had simultaneous radiation and chemotherapy for a period of 5 weeks for a tumor that was located very low in my rectum. I have Lynch syndrome, and It was determined that the best treatment for full recovery was total removal of my colon and rectum. I mainly struggle with the issues related to high very liquid output, and have tried a number of barrier options. At the present time I am using a barrier that can also be used by urostomy patients and has a stronger adhesive. I use it with a round donut shaped adhesive barrier seal and have good results thus far. I find it is also important to change my barrier every few days. The group has been so helpful for me! Thank you for being in touch!
Hi, Colleen,
I two struggled with diarrhea (liquid stool). My doctor told me to do the following: take 1 teaspoon and 1/2 of Metamucil each day. That worked for me! After I got the liquid controlled, I only take when my stool begins to get too liquid. Applesauce is a fairly good food for thickening the stool.

You probably already tried this, but stoma powder works for me when I get broken skin, then non sting skin prep.
This is my formula for keeping the skin around my stoma happy:
Put on Nitrile gloves.
Use adhesive remover wipe to help remove old pouch.
Wipe off excess fecal matter on stoma with water only.
Squirt some saline water on stoma.
Dry area. Especially around bottom of stoma.
Wipe skin with SurePrep Protective wipe.
Squirt stoma powder all around bottom of stoma.
Squeeze stoma paste around bottom of stoma. If it gets sticky put some stoma powder on it.
Wipe/brush off any excess on skin around stoma with dry cloth.
Spray around the entire area with SurePrep Rapid Dry.
Check that all is dry after a few seconds.
Affix the wafer/pouch on skin.
I also use a Coloplast barrier strip 12076 along the bottom edge and sides to prevent leaks.
I use Hollister CeraPlus pouch either one or two piece.
I do this every other day after a shower.
(I find there is some odor if I don’t change it after a shower.)
I change the pouch every other day.
I haven’t had any skin issues since using this routine.
I hope some of this overly long post will be useful to you.
I use stoma powder and skin barrier wipes to protect skin around stoma. Switched to stoma barrier rings from stoma paste because paste doesn't hold up as well for me Also barrier strips along bottom of ostomy. Hollister two piece works well for me. Best of luck.
After a conversation with a representative at Coloplast I ordered some samples of their protective sheets. I have used them for two changes now and have had very good results even in this very humid weather. She explained that the barrier shields I have been using can be compromised by the high liquid output of a ileostomy and become soft and spongy, which they did, and break the seal. The irritation I had has completely disappeared and others might want to try them. They are applied first to the skin before the wafer. You will definitely need an adhesive remover wipe to remove them comfortably.
Well done you!
Thank you for your post.
