Seizures and vomiting

Posted by tonyde @tonyde, May 17 9:16am

Has anyone experienced vomiting during a seizure? I had the worst seizure in my life a few weeks, it started with vomiting. I'm told it continued during the seizure, first with whatever food was in my stomach, then stomach acid. I don't remember any of it. All I know is my throat was sore for days because of it.

I recently had a bout of vomiting, off and on for about an hour. The vomiting started with all of whatever food was in my stomach, continued with stomach acid and ended with my throat burnt from stomach acid. I remember the entire episode which I don't during my typical seizure.

Has anyone experienced a seizure that consisted of vomiting only? I had no other symptoms of being sick. Was the vomiting a seizure?

Hi @tonyde, I'm sorry that you're experiencing this. I've had vomiting before and after a seizure, but never vomiting alone. Apparently, there's an extremely rare form of epilepsy called abdominal epilepsy. Have a read of the page I'll link below. It may be something to discuss with your neurologist.

Thank you, I've had the nausea, bloating and stomach pain along with the usual symptoms of seizures, confusion, lethargy, loss of consciousness, dizziness, headaches and involuntary muscle contractions. We can only pray we're not one of those rare people.

Hi @tonyde
I might have had this experience in my tonic clinic seizure in 2019, but I can not remember well. But, today I for sure know how my epilepsy and gut are interconnected and how seizures have an impact on this part of my body. Most of the time, after having a seizure (my seizures are mostly focal/partial complex seizures), I have to go to the toilet. By taking gluten out of my diet since January 2022, my seizures were reduced by 60%. Since last November, I have been adopting an anti-inflammatory diet and have already seen some benefits in terms of seizures. However, it is too soon to present some statistics.
Perhaps the medication you are taking is also affecting that? While I was taking Vimpat in 2019/2020, I had much nausea and vomiting, having this medication caused SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth) which I am still treating. I had a hard time with my meals and had to eat many times a day so as to have a minimum quantity of food. Even so, I lost quite some weight (I became like my husband used to say a butterfly filet so thin I became) and muscular mass. Not a good experience. Advise you to check on the medication you are taking if there are any side-effects related to the stomach and gut.
I hope you get better!

I believe my first bout of vomiting was caused by the severity of my seizure and hope the second was caused by something I ate. I've been taking Lamictal and Trileptal for more than 10 years and was seizure free unless I forgot to consistently take my meds. Then I fell, had a concussion and my seizures came back with a vengeance.

Hi @tonyde
I am sorry to hear you have hit your head when you fell and had a concussion. How long ago did this happen?
Reading about concussions on the internet, the symptoms that can appear after such an incident are: headache, mental confusion, lack of coordination, memory loss, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, ringing in the ears, drowsiness and excessive fatigue. There is no specific cure for concussion. Resting and restricting activities allow the brain to recover. Headache medications and anti-nausea medications may be used to combat symptoms.
Have you talked with your doctor since you had this fall and your seizures started to appear again? If yes, could you share with us what he or she has said? Thank you!

The fall happened in October 2023. My neurologist stated the change in my seizures is directly connected to a brain injury resulting from fall. My next appointment with him is May 21, 2024, I plan to my vomiting during that visit

Hi @tonyde
I am sorry to hear that. Has your neurologist since your fall made any changes in medications and dosages of Lamictal and Trileptal?
May 21st is almost there 🙂 Wishing you a good appointment with your doctor!

I have a prescription for Ondansetron to quickly stop the nausea. It dissolves instantly on the tongue. Whenever I get nauseous, it scares me because I don't know if it's a sign of an oncoming seizure or not. Taking the pill has the flow on effect of calming me down when the nausea stops.
It's been very helpful in my case. It may not be right for you, but I thought I should mention it.

Some good advice, thank you. I'll discuss with my doctor during tomorrow's visit

My husband often vomits during prolonged seizures. By prolonged, I mean they will come in clusters over the course of a day and we generally have to go to the ER to get IV meds to stop them after several hours.

At least one time, he was nauseous all day prior to a tonic clinic seizure.

With him, the vomiting itself is not the only seizure symptom; but it accompanies his other symptoms.
