Cycle of mucus buildup in Bronchiectasis

Posted by spider109 @spider109, May 5 5:06am

I have been diagnosed with NSIP with fibrosis & significant Bronchiectasis for 3 years now. Can someone please explain to me if what I experience is the normal cycle of mucus buildup in Bronchiectasis. I nebulize twice a day albuterol followed by 7% saline. I usually start out for 1-2 days where mucus is quite easy to cough up and seems a lot thinner. Then day by day after that, it gets thicker and harder to cough up for about 3-4 days. Then back to thinner and easier, followed by thicker and harder. I also supplement with Guaifenison, and do Areobika after nebulizer. I feel I must be doing something right, I haven’t had a lung infection. And my O2 says stay consistently at 93-95. Is this the usual daily cycle/pattern of patients with Bronchiectasis? Any guidance or ideas is very appreciated. Thank-you.

I've had diagnosed mild Bronchiectasis for about 3 years, also, and use similar meds to what you do. However, my experience differs in that my mucus thinning doesn't vary except by frequency of Albuterol use. I puff twice every night to maintain the thinning of mucus - any skipping of more than 1 day causes my coughing to become 'tight' and not produce mucus. I also use 1600mg of Guaifenesin (800 x2), but the Albuterol seems to be the major player for me. My annual CT scans indicate that I'm stable, no worsening since diagnosis. And, finally, my condition seems to not affect my ability to continue my previous life style. I wish you the best of luck in your continuing efforts to 'fix' your Bronchiectasis. As you determine solutions, possible solutions, balms, any source of relief, please continue to post here on Mayo Clinic Connect for the benefit of the rest of the group. Thanks, Ray.

I have BE and MAC. And I must be doing something wrong - I follow the same protocol as others: take my albuterol and then nebulize 7% saline through my areobika /aeroeclipse. Then I huff cough. I then inhale my Arykace . I still can’t get mucus up. I feel it’s loosened and once in a while I get a little bit up which is light yellow or clear. Any advice or explanation is welcomed. Thanks

Prior to huff coughing do you do short, medium, and deep breaths with holds? I follow this patient info sheet and I usually get results. I also change positions -- first upright seated, then laying on my back, then side to side. I listen for rumbles and wheezes. Your results might vary. For me it takes a maddening amount of tweaking and time to get things just right. Wishing you productivity!

My daily routine: I do 2 puffs Albuterol then nebulize with 7% saline & Aerobika simultaneously, followed by 20 min with my Hillrom compression vest. I take 1200mg of Guaifenesin (600 x2) and 1200 mg N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine (600 x2) a.m. and p.m. Initially I coughed up a lot of clear and light yellow mucus. But, since faithfully keeping to this routine for almost a year, I have seen a significant decrease in mucus output. And, my cough which had been pretty bad, is greatly reduced. I've been concerned about the reduction in mucus output and am hoping this is good news. I will find out more once I have my next CT scan which is due early next year.
