Vertigo

Posted by lisabeans @lisabeans, Apr 18, 2017

Hope all is well with everyone. I just finished testing with my primary and I do have vertigo. She said therapy may help relieve the dizziness. I do have pills to take to help some of the dizziness. Just wondering if this is common with people who have autoimmune diseases? Has any one done physical therapy for vertigo? Did you get good results?

You are very welcome. With my eye problem, the misalignment was so small that I apparently subconsciously kept them pointing the same way throughout the day, but by late afternoon/evening, that slight strain cauht up with me. Most of my dizzy spells occurred in late afternoon and evening, especially when I was concentrating on something small, like a puzzle, or my computer. I wear these glasses - actually I have two pair - one for all the time like driving (my right won't pass the eye test for driving), and a pair for reading/close-up work. I have not had any dizzy spells since I started wearing these.

Good luck!

Yes, I occasionally struggle with vertigo, and yes, yes, yes Physical therapy helps, in fact after several treatments I have no dizziness. I have never been diagnosed with an autoimmune disease.

I had a vestibular evaluation through my ENT. They were able to pin point my problem. They gave me exercises to do for 3 weeks and it fixed me! No more vertigo nor dizziness. I have sudden SNHI bilateral hearing loss. They aren’t sure if I have Meniere’s Disease or Autoimmune Inner Ear Disease. Sudden hearing loss in both ears is not likely with Meniere’s. Rheumatologist says all blood and inflammation markers are normal so doesn’t match with AIED. Still no hearing improvement and tinnitus is extremely loud 24/7 in both ears. No more dizziness since the exercises. Salt was a big trigger for the dizziness for me.

I’ve never heard of salt being an issue with Dizziness. I am assuming you have crystals that have moved. Can you tell me if that is so and how you discovered salt being a problem. I am very glad you found the answer for you.

Crystals are not my problem. Once the SNHI hit, I had to retrain my brain to understand my new balance needs. The PT exercises retrained my brain to handle the different information my reduced hearing senses were signaling. Excess sodium can affect the fluid in the inner ear and can cause dizziness. Avoiding salt, sugar, caffeine, chocolate, and alcohol may help reduce dizziness and tinnitus. My tinnitus is better if I have less than 1100 mg per day but never goes away. It is really difficult to consume less than 1100 mg/ day. Our daily minimum is supposed to be no less than 1100mg just to stay healthy. I am also taking a diuretic medication to see if that will help but having limited, not sustaining effects. Having MRI and CT of head and neck requested by a neurologist. Checking to see if there be another cause for the sudden SNHI and loud tinnitus.

I have struggled with a form of vertigo called PPPD, Persistent Postural-Perceptual Dizziness, since 2017. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK578198/#:~:text=Persistent%20postural%20perceptual%20dizziness%20(PPPD,%2C%20peripheral%2C%20or%20vascular%20insult... PT is the only thing that works for me. I also have the auto immune disease CIDP-they are not related clinically but do interact at times.

Amen to Mayo being a "DIFFERENT WORLD"! And absolutely you need to advocate for yourself. Read as much as you can without going down a rabbit hole. Medicine is an esoteric language that you need to familiarize yourself. Talk the talk and get your doctors to walk the walk. If there is something to avoid discussing, I would also suggest pulling out any diagnosis of fibromyalgia. The prejudice you because of it. That is not right, but so very true. Stick with the facts of the symptoms, and it sounds like leaving out vertigo, which could be one of those hot buttons that you avoid as well. Good luck to you, and I hope you find what you seeking to alleviate your symptoms. God bless, and hopefully you can make it to Mayo Rochester. Buckle up, because you have NEVER seen medicine performed quite like this. You are put through the gambit of testing by, well simply the best doctors in the world. And lastly, everyone at Mayo is "NICE"! Yes, even the doctors!!!! Unbelievable experience when your health goes sideways. Thank you for all that you do Mayo Clinic!!! Sean L. Roop
