I was having sever leg and foot cramps and had blood tests that showed low magnesium, vitamin D, and Potassium among other things. Now I supplement with double dosses of those as well as a multi-vite and although the cramps still come it is a lot less sever and less often. I also was drinking a lot of water and my Doc recommended I cut back because I was flushing to much before my body could absorb the needed vites and minerals. Even with fortified water. Good Luck !

Awesome!! Thank you all!! We are redrawing labs this morning. Last week all my serum levels were normal. Just very high CPK & BUN & creatine.

@coastalgirl, I'm interested in kidney disease as a cause of your cramps. I have both, but haven't discussed cramps with my nephrologist. How do you think I could raise that issue with her most effectively? There are so many facets of kidney disease that finding how it produces cramps is like looking for planets among the stars! Can you help me zero in on this?

That's funny you asked. The very question I asked my doctor yesterday. My GFR is now down to 52. But they keep saying no worries. I am probably the wrong person to ask about, how to approach an md. I am pretty bold. Lol My doctors never have to guess what I am thinking. But of course I am respectful but I am not always by text book so I push them to think outside the book. 🙂 Remember you pay them for a service.

The kidneys are such an amazing organ. Their responsibilities range from removing toxins from the blood, maintaining normal blood pressure, to keeping electrolytes balanced just to name a few.
I never had a direct answer on the cramps but personally felt it was due to the lack of removal of the toxins from the blood.
I was diagnosed with polycystic kidney disease which led to my kidney transplant.
I would suggest trying to find out what is causing your diminished function and focus in on any and all natural ways to restore as much kidney function as possible. Read as much as you can, work with a kidney nutrition specialist, acupuncture.
My acupuncturist is working with a client that is diabetic and was in stage 4 kidney failure that is now in stage 2 and down from 3 diabetic medications to 1 medication.
I am 6 yrs. post transplant at 53 yrs old and doing well so good luck in this journey. Best wishes!!

Just to give you hope, i had 6% kidney function at the time of my transplant and managed to stay off dialysis with my holistic approach so stay positive and proactive.
I love Mayo's approach because they work as a team and each physician has access to all your medical needs.
I would highly recommend Mayo to anyone with health issues.
