Digestive Health

Been treated for Gerd for over a year. Now my GI doctor says it's not Gerd It's Spine disease. This diagnose is without ANY test for it. How can you give a diagnosis without any Testing!

I would definitely get a second opinion on that diagnosis.

And I'd start looking for a new doctor.

I was taking a PPI for the last month for acid stomach. The script was only for 30 dayswhich was up two days ago. I feel great but when I wake up in the morning I feel a little discomfort...not pain, not nausea, just like a little something is not quite right. As soon as I eat I am fine all day and night, I am wondering if I should be back on the PPI, although I would rather not....

I agree with Scott, get an answer to how your diagnosis went from your GI tract to your spine? Do you have pinched nerves, bulging discs, osteoarthritis in your thoracic spine? I am 65, I thought I had a better handle on all my problems, but, now that I've had to leave 45 years with an HMO... I have needed copies, lists, etc for me finding new doctors. WOW!!! I am shocked at how much I missed. So, get forceful and demand answers. I was told many (46 yrs) ago, when I was pregnant with twins... I asked other women what is GERD... they all answered, if you have it, you WILL KNOW WHAT IT IS. The pregnancy was quite literally hell, I puked 7-15x day for 5 months, 4 hospital stays, but I didn't have GERD.
Yet I have been diagnosed with GERD by endless doctors, I have it a few times a year, I don't need or want more medication to mess up my body even more. I have been able to use charcoal capsules for GERD and when I get gassy, with NO side effects and no bad taste. Stay tough, you are owed answers.

I'm replying just because I have a bad feeling about PPI's. I have a bezillion things wrong in my GI tract, from mouth to anus; from life altering serious, to serious, to sensitive, to painful, to little pain, etc. I have used charcoal capsules for many years; helps with gas, air, nausea, cramping, etc....without causing anymore problems or nasty side effects. It is very important that you take the charcoal alone, not @ least 1-2 hours before or after any other product, the charcoal can hinder the absorption process for a bit. I am 65, I used to do whatever a Dr. said to do or medicine to take, I trusted them to be correct... but no more. When "idiopathic" is in too many diagnoses, that is a HUGE RED FLAG for me. Like I said I, know little about the real truth about PPI's, so, for me, it would take a lot of convincing to take them. You said "...not quite right ". I am still learning how, but that is your body telling you to listen to your body. Good luck with your hunt for answers.

Thank you so much for your comment-I am going to get charcoal capsules for sure. This has been going on for over a year, losing 30 lbs. in the process. I feel badly for you going through all this while pregnant. I puked a couple times a day and stopped eating because what's the point if you can't keep it down. I have an appointment with my health care provider soon and will definitely tell her what's going on. One thing, I will find a new GI doctor. I have frequented the hospital a few times myself. Thank you again Shelley. Very informative.

Kathy, I don't know how old you are, but 30 lbs of unintentional weight loss, definitely doesn't seem like a GERD or just spine issue. Are you puking now or was that in reference to a past pregnancy? On the lighter side of life, I would love to lose 30 lbs. Let us all know what you find with a new dr. Shelley

I was taking pantoprazole delayed release 40 mg tabs. They did make my stomach feel better, but the script was only for 30 days, so I am trying to figure out if I am all better or not. The only dicey time is in the morning when my stomach is empty. ksdm
