COPD/Emphesma

I was diagnosed with COPd in August, the pulmonary doctor said it’s moderate right now, I am a smoker for 56 years, trying to quit which is very hard for me, not on any inhalers yet, or oxygen, my oxygen level is 97, I get tired and dry cough occasionally, that’s my story right now

I was diagnosed with COPD, in 2017, which was too late , as I had been smoking for 55 Plus years!! Scared me, and finally threw them down….cold turkey…When the Dr. told me There was No cure, Terminal…..it is now January 8,2024, I am 79, and in end stage, and, on oxygen 24/7, a nebulizer 4 times a day, and on a “Trilogy sleep system”, because I retain CO2, which has put me in the hospital, more times then I can remember. I only tell you part of my story, to encourage you, and anyone else to Quit smoking, if I could quit, anyone can.

Dupixent has been very effective for me. I have Stage IV COPD and had tons of secretions which dupixent has greatly relieved. It is a prescription drug made by Sanofi and just recently has been approved by the FDA to be on the priority tract for use for COPD. It is a type of drug that is called a mono-clonal antibody and is used successfully for almost six different conditions. Speak with your pulmonary Dr., he should be well acquainted with it. hope this helps!

It truly is turning out to be a wonder drug. Husband has been on it for a few years for his eczema, The best his skin as been since a child. No side effects. I keep asking my Pulmonary Doctor for it and all I get is "we'll see". I also keep asking about the valves that they have been using and get the same answer from him.

I would then seek another Pulmonology Physician. It took me 3 solid months of research on the valves to learn all I could. I finally decided that Duke University could afford me the best experience and received a referral to their Interventional Pulmonary Department. I called the Staff and they were terrific. The Valves have been approved since 2018, however, Duke's Pulmonary team had been on the ground level of research and has been working with them for over 16 years. Dupixent is a little different story.... the FDA has not formally approved it for COPD, but has for Eosinophilic asthma, but it is on the fast tract and should be approved by June of this year. BUT, physicians can and often do write prescriptions for medication for what is called "off-label" medication. In fact about 20% of prescriptions written are for off-label use. There is criteria you should meet prior to being placed on Dupixent for COPD. Hope this gives you a little background info to move forward if you feel the need. Even if it means finding a new Practitioner.

Consider yourself lucky that you're not worse off. I smoked for 47 years, find myself with hyperinflated lungs and Ox level around 90. Energy is quite low. Stop smoking and start exercising before you deteriorate further!
