Anyone else experience Weight Gain with long COVID?

Posted by RMS @rinadbq, Oct 8, 2021

I have had ~30 pound weight gain since November 2020 when I initially had COVID. It seems disproportionate to my calorie intake. Any one else with this?

I am so sorry that you are going through this.I am going through the same thing right now.I did not test for long covid, but I know it got me.The problem is I got an Iron infusion around the same time and thought that was causing all my issues.I was in really good shape like you and my life has been stolen from me.I had a reaction which I believe now was covid attacking my whole body.I went from walking on the bike trail 8 miles a day to basically being disabled.I just got tested for Cushings as well because of my massive weight gain of over 100 pounds. The test came back negative though.I also have thyroid disease.I have been on 50 mg of synthroid, but they raised it to 75 mg because my TSH was a little elevated. At the beginning of this I was only a little over 100 pounds and I am 5'11.I could not swallow so I could not eat.I thought I was going to die,but luckily my primary put me on steroids which gave me the ability to eat again.I believe Covid does change the cells or DNA.I don't even look like the same person.I use have really nice long hair and now I have what looks like chemo hair.It is like nothing I have ever seen before.I have lost all the strength in the trunk of my body, arms and legs.My upper arms and legs are huge though.I feel like Marshmallow State puffman when I walk.I have had every test you could possibly imagine and they can't find much of anything. One neurologist thinks I haveva metabolic muscular disease, but the Endricinologist does not think so.It could be Metabolic.Nothing in my body is working properly.I have even lost strength in my face for talking, chewing, swallowing and facial expressions.Addisons and some other diseases are low blood pressure and weight loss.I am the opposite. My cortisol is fine too.The only thing they have found is low DEHA Sulfate, low carbon dioxide in the blood and low testosterone.I am in my mid 40s so I am in perimenopause.I am sure that did not help matters. The Doctors just don't have a clue though. It is hard because unless you are going through this yourself people don't understand.

I HAVE EXPERIENCED THE SAME THING. HANDS ARE NUMB, VISION OFF, BACK, LEGS,GUTS HURT ALL THE TIME. MY IRON IS LOW AND MY PHOSPHATE SOMETHING
IS LOW, WHICH INDICATES INFECTION. THEY CAN'T FIND ANYTHING. HAD EVERY TEST KNOWN TO MAN. MY ENDO PUT ME ON OZEMPIC, GAINED 9 POUNDS, CHANGED ME
TO MOJOURNA NOT LOSING AT ALL. EVERY BONE IN MY BODY HURTS GAINED ABOUT 30 POUNDS AND I AM SO BLOATED AND SWOLLEN. CONSTIPATION IS HORRIBLE. NO ONE WANTS TO SEE ME, BECAUSE THEY DO NOT KNOW WHAT TO DO. HURTS ME TO
WALK, SIT, LAY, STAND. I AM NOW DIZZY AND FEARFUL OF FALLING. LOSING HEARING
IN MY RIGHT EAR AND FEEL LIKE CRAP. I CRY A LOT, BECAUSE I WAS ENERGETIC, FUNNY, KIND AND NOW I WISH SOME DAYS TO NOT WAKE UP. I HAD SHINGLES, FLU
AND COVID IN OCTOBER, NOVEMBER AND DECEMBER. I TOOK THE STUPID SHOTS AND STILL GOT THE CRAP. I RECENTLY WENT TO AN ENT FOR MY HEARING AND HE
SAID I HAD SHINGLES IN MY EAR CANAL. I ITCH, NAUSEATED ALL THE TIME AND NEVER SLEEP ANYMORE. THE VACCINE REACTED ON ME
AS I HAVE HASHIMOTO'S AS WELL AND THEY TOLD ME IT WAS SAFE. SUCH A LIE!

I am really sorry.Unfortunately we were the unlucky ones.No one could possibly understand unless they are in our shoes.Thr symptoms are so bizarre. My loss of muscle in my diaphram/sternum is so weird.I also don't even have the ability to throw up.I guess that is because so much netve damage was done to my vagus nerve from the covid /vaccine.They were both man-made so it is a tossup.I explain my symptoms to the neurologists and they have no clue. They can't help because these illnesses brought on are not natural. It is way out of their league..The only people that would be interested are probably scientists at NIH.They want to be the ones to figure it out.I just can't believe there are not more long covid and vaccine illness clinics. So many people are permanently disabled. It is like everyone forgot about it.I was so careful during the pandemic got my vaccines and still became severely ill.I agree with you that I don't think the vaccines make a difference.I just had two good friends moms die of brain tumors that were in Amazing health with no symptoms and two guys that live across the way had strokes around the same time. They were both young and in Great shape.I know people get sick, but I think covid/vaccine is very involved in alot of these all of a sudden deaths.I also think alot of these horrible symptoms and diseases come on months or years after the initial infection. It is just awful. There is so many people that worked so hard during the Pandemic and ended up getting sick who had to leave their jobs.Alot of them can't get disability so are in horrible situations now.Meanwhile there are people who have never worked a day in their lives and are living off Disability.Something needs to change. It is sad.

I gained 10+ pounds right after having Covid Feb 2021 and Dec 2021. No one was talking about the weight gain. It is quite frustrating in addition to all of the other issues of long covid. I’m hearing that Covid triggers an inflammation response in your body. For me, the weight will not budge no matter what I have done/do.

I am in the same boat. I had covid for the third time about 3 weeks before a hip replacement. I gained over 10 lbs and can’t get the weight off even though i have been exercising 4 days a week.

Had covid for 23 days Nov/Dec 2023. Have gained 30 pounds in five months. Still gaining. Have never weighed this much in my whole life. Eat well. Slowly building physical endurance back. Was cleaning horse stalls the day before I got sick. Can barely walk a few blocks or vacuum my home before I fall asleep.
Neurological symptoms escalating. Health care and testing moving slowly. Intense abdominal bloating still undiagnosed.
Trying to find a new plateau of living. My former life is no more.

You're story sounds exactly like mine. I am now 40 pounds over my normal weight. I gained it all within a 6 month period after Covid.
It's been just over a year now and I'm still not able to clean my house, walk more than a block or so.
Luckily I was able to retire. I was a dog groomer for 30 years. No way I could ever do that kind of physical work now.

Have you noticed anymore changes? Any tips to share?

The weight keeps climbing, I am now at my heaviest I have ever been, for a total of 45 pounds since having Covid. The only thing that stops it is hiit workouts, but it doesn’t really help with losing it. If I lose it’s 3-5 pounds and then it comes back.
My memory is still affected, however after switching to a vegetarian diet I feel like my energy has gotten better, it still cannot get the weight under control no matter what I do. I have tried berberine, alpha lipoic acid, I am taking chlorella, turmeric, fish oil, multivitamins, probiotics, and nothing works. I read a post that someone shared about trying nattokinase because apparently Covid can cause micro clotting. That is the next thing I will try, I refuse to go down the ozempic route, someone I know had his gallbladder paralyzed due to that drug.
