Nosebleeds with Esbriet (Pirfenidone)?

Posted by grrranny @grrranny, Apr 18 11:09pm

Hubby is in his second week taking Esbriet (Pirfinedone) -- taking 2 pills 3 times a day now. Had a nosebleed tonight for seemingly no reason. Have any of you had this experience with this drug? Up until now, he has only had minimal and occasional nose bleeds with (mostly) night-time oxygen. Uses Ayr gel, which helps a little. He is not taking his 3rd dose of Esbriet with dinner tonight. Any suggestions? Should he cut back to 1 pill 3 times a day like he was taking last week?

You should check with the doctor before cutting out any doses. My old pulmonologist had me using gel saline to rehydrate my nose (stopped the nose bleeds). Also, you can ask your doctor about Vitamin K. I had a medical professional recommend it for my son for his nosebleeds. However, check with your doctor first to make sure there are no drug interactions.

Thanks so much, Chickytina.
He has resumed his prescribed dosage today, after using nasal gel last night, and proclaiming himself fine. He does take vitamin K with his vitamin D.
We will see how it goes.

Hubby has been on the full dose of Esbriet (one tablet 3 times a day) for several months now. Has had to cut back to 2 per day due to occasional nosebleeds, but lungs do show improvement on CAT scan. Has had few (and minor) nosebleeds lately, but still some sneezing "fits" after dinner.
But after dinner tonight and the fairly routine sneezing, he had the worst nosebleed yet (after only one tablet with dinner -- because he missed his breakfast dose). So now we're thinking he might have to cut back to only one tablet per day (possibly just with breakfast) and/or eliminate this med entirely.
Not sure what to do. Any ideas or suggestions?
