Saline and Walgreen's Pharmacy

Posted by harrynsc @harrynsc, Apr 17 10:15pm

Recently, someone on the forum mentioned that they got saline
from GoodRx for less than $11. I went to Walgreen's today
to pick up my saline and they said it would be $49.35. I have
Medicare and AARP/United Health insurance. I thought it might
be for three months, which would be about $16/month, but
they said, no, it's for one month. I said, "You have my GoodRx
card on file, check it with GoodRx". So they said it was $10.28.
I said, "Why didn't you check it?" They said the software just
takes the insurance on a previous prescription. This is the
second time I have noticed that their software is bad.
I had CVS for more than ten years and liked them. When
I got this insurance last year, they said I had to have Walgreen's.
Has anyone else had good or bad experiences with CVS or
Walgreen's?

With WAlgreens IMO you have to tell them to use good rx when you fill your prescription and not count on them to route through your insurance info on the computer. I always mention it when I call to refill and tell them to put a note on it but they will readjust at the check out if you point it out then. If you leave with the script though they will usually not change the price so do it before you pay.

Please explain to me what it means you have your good Rex card with them. I tried using the coupon but then I need the paper prescription with me to take to the cheapest place and doctors now just fax it to you pharmacy. Thank you

@lilianna GoodRx has an app, which is more convenient than paper, at least for me!

@harrynsc The whole healthcare system is overwhelmed, top to bottom. Our current system was never intended to take care of the numbers of people today who need care. Call it an unintended consequence of the ACO. The winners? Insurance companies, politicians, lobbyists, pharma. Losers? Healthcare workers - the full gambit including pharmacies and us. There's a trend among young career doctors to leave the field. Who needs the barrage of bureaucracy and insurance companies looking over their shoulders questioning their medical judgement. Insurance companies claw back money from doctors if they think a note was insufficient, months and months after the care was delivered. Where else does this happen?

Nonetheless I find myself very patient with CVS Walgreen workers. Dealing with ill disgruntled customers all day is no fun. A smile costs nothing and is contagious. Sorry - my coffee must have had extra caffeine in it!

I gave them my GoodRx card several months ago and they entered it in their computer.
So when I go, I don't have to give it to them again. The prescription for saline is for
a year with refills. I started it in February so they have that on file also.

I ask my doc for a paper copy of my Rx - they just print one out for me.

I got my prescription filled at Costco. I’m on Medicare with United Health card advantage plan and it cost $3.87

HI Harry, I hope you were nice to the pharmacist or tech at your Walgreens! It is not their fault the computer program that runs their prices has this awful glitch.

EVERY Walgreens pharmacy I am familiar with, in 2 states, is operating understaffed and overworked, and doing the best that they can. I talked to our long-time pharmacist, and he told me when Walgreens contracts with insurance providers to take on blocks of new patients, the individual stores get little or no additional budget or staffing.

Here is what I have done when I have been unhappy with their operations - On the website, go to "Contact Us", select "Store Pharmacy" then "Other Issues" and report your experience.
If it is a computer issue, they can escalate it to the Tech Staff. If it is an employee training issue, they can inform the pharmacy manager.

Have you reported this issue?

Awesome! You have the Advantage plan. I have the Medicare plan, so it might not
apply.
Thanks,
