Have you had a revision? What questions should I ask?

I am almost 3 years out (June 2021) from the sleeve. When I started my process, I planned on doing a RNY but was convinced by the nurse practitioner of the program that I wasn’t a good candidate due to the mental health meds I take. Seeing how they were my providers, I believed they had my best interest at heart. I do blame myself in part as I didn’t ask more questions. I was never told until a year out that I’d probably never lose more than 100 lbs. I have lost 110 lbs and they keep acting like it’s some miracle. I started at well over 300 lbs so I’m still over 200 lbs now. I’m still considered morbidly obese. Because I have SVT, I cannot take phentermine or anything like that. I have an appointment next week to talk about doing a revision. I need info. What questions do I ask? Have you had one? What do I need to know?

I am planning to have the Roux N Y done this summer, and would like to learn more about the medications you are talking about. I am on depression and Anxiety medications. I would rather not have to take them at all if/when I have the surgery.

That is definitely something you want to talk to your provider about.

Can I? I suppose. Will I? Not sure. My insurance won’t cover it. They will cover Zepbound though. My husband just started that this week. I just hear way too many stories about it, so I’d like to wait.
I have so appointment on the 16 in Duluth, MN to meet with the surgeon, dietitian and someone else- I forget who. I’d like to hear what they have to say.

I had gastric sleeve in 2016 with severe complication (stomach stricture). In 2019 they had to do a revision to gastric bypass in order to fully remove the stricture as it had twisted again! In 2019 I weighted 165 lbs and once they revised me I went to 138 lbs, I am T2 diabetic and 5'8". By Fall 2021 I was 204 lbs! The honeymoon was over! My weight loss doctor put me on Mounjaro (since I an diabetic...it is called Zepbound for weight loss) and I now weigh 142 lbs (since late 2021) and since the shot regulates my insulin resistance and quiets all food noise I never gain....I just maintain. If these weekly shots had been out earlier I would never have gotten WLS. I did have a very scary complication but now going to the bypass I am having to get IV iron every 3 months and my l lab vitamin tests are always coming back low. Sure you can lose rest of your weight but once the honeymoon is over it sure is difficult to maintain the loss even with low calorie diet and daily exercise! You have to treat the insulin resistance we all have that are over weight and these GLP-1 shots address all of it beautifully!! I wish you all the best in your journey! Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions, am always happy to share my journey!!

In all fairness, there are a lot of stories about bariatric surgeries too. I had RNY then revised it to duodenal switch AND have been on Mounjaro for 2+ years. I have lost all the weight I needed to lose plus some. I’m now working on building back muscle. Adding the shots to already invasive surgeries is scary indeed especially since some people do have significant side effects from the shots but I’m so glad to have hit it with both surgery and shots to get where I am because one certainty obesity definitely has health risks.
