PMR onset under 55?

Hi! I’m wondering how many of you were diagnosed under age 55? I was 51. Thanks!

@vinniejl1

How have things been going for you

Lots of lifestyle changes for the positive. I was very active and healthy otherwise, but I’ve had to really dial in my diet-gluten-free, green tea, omega-3s…I have found that to really feel well with PMR we must be vigilant with a good lifestyle. Best to you!

I was 68. My mother was around 60 when diagnosed. Apparently many Doctors are reluctant to diagnose it prior to 65 because many other conditions can present as PMR in the early stages.

I was 48 when diagnosed a year ago although my Rheumatologist goes back and forth w my diagnosis because I’m under 50. I have all the classic symptoms and am responding to the typical pred/hydroxychloroquine treatment. She usually refers to it as PMR though.

Diagnosed at 54! Symptoms started year and a half before.

I was 50 when I was diagnosed with PMR -- lucky to have a great general practitioner that didn't look at age or sex as a condition to have PMR

I recently ran across an old medical file that had a letter from a previous rheumatologist to my former primary addressing my condition when I was in my 40’s, many years ago. After seeing a neurologist, primary and her, reviewing labs, MRI, emg, tests, she was stumped. I had 2 frozen shoulders, weak stiff legs, sore scalp…. She said that it actually looked like PMR, except for the fact that I was so young! I never did get a diagnosis for my series of issues that 2 years. My brother is now in his 50’s and having similar symptoms as me.

Since I don’t have symptoms now and am very active, can I be tested? For this and giant cell?

I'm not a doctor, but I too was on the young side....not as young as you. I'd guess (again not a doctor) that if you don't have symptoms, that you won't show PMR markers in your blood tests, notably CRP and Sed rate. You might both have a genetic test and check for markers of inflammatory diseases.

Ok. I think I had those blood tests last year when I saw a neurologist. About the same time diagnosed with post covid syndrome. Anyway, they were negative, I believe. For that, I am relieved.

I developed severe PMR basically on my 55th birthday. It went misdiagnosed for 2 months because most Dr's assume its a Senior's disease, but my Specialist said there are many false beliefs about PMR and he sees as many patients age 50-55 as he does in any other similar age group, but never under age 50. I am 57 and still struggling to reduce my prednisone dose. I just reduced from 10mg to 9 and am having a bad flare up, so not sure what to increase to and it will take many weeks to see my Doctor. I do fear that being diagnosed earlier and having a severe case may be an indication of a long term condition. Tapering prednisone has been a difficult process.
