Male 77 YO. Restless leg syndrome?

Posted by richardshih @richardshih, Feb 21 11:40am

Hello everyone:

I am helping my father do a little bit of research. He has recently been complaining about pain/soreness in his legs when he goes to bed. He has indicated that this persists in any position he puts himself in bed. If he is able to fall asleep, the discomfort is gone. However, if he was to wake up and use the restroom, the discomfort returns and is severe enough to rob him a nights sleep. I dont think its RLS as he does not experience any involuntary twitching. Does anyone know what this may be?

I have RLS and it has reached a point where I take Requip 3x a day now. I also have to use some homeopathic meds to supplement them sometimes. It is a terrible feeling like bugs crawling inside my legs trying to get out. I realize one problem is I have low iron because I have hemochromatosis. That I can't do anything about. If anyone has any suggestions they would be appreciated.

I nip RLS in the bud when it starts at night by running magnesium gel on my legs. I buy it from Amazon. If it doesn’t totally stop it, at least you would be able to take less medication for it.

I too have had success with magnesium cream for restless leg as well as muscle cramping. Recently I have been using Frankencense essential oil mixed with a carrier oil. Works well for me.

I’m 63 and I have that restlessness in feet at night. I too wonder.i had a one Dr. says poly neuropathy another Dr. podrist says idiopathic and RA of ankle but
I have continuous twitching of toes. Sometimes I thought it was gout because big toe pain and toe feels stiff and the other toes a hard to move.mostly the pain is left foot ,ankle and pain of left knee area
I had a nerve testing done that says right leg nerves are worst than the left.
The Rt. Is very mild. I’m starting to wonder if it’s restless legs and the movement or twitching maybe aggravating the ankle pain and caused RA of that ankle
Last year the podiatrist did an injections in ankle and he did give half I ankle and the other half the middle of top toes . It did help slow it down while sitting but it’s still aggravating to try and get sleep. It’s been 6mos.since the cortisone injection that they usually give.
I’m going to ask if I can try the restless leg medication
One doctor says oh it’s not Rest less leg
Restless does run in family
I’m just writing to help put mind at ease that others do feel that pain at night

After reading most of the comments from others who suffer from RLS, it sounds very familiar to what I experience at night when I go to bed. I will have painful cramping in my feet and calves. It may occur 3-4 times a night, or more, during sleep and I have to get out of bed to stretch and walk around a bit. The pain and cramps usually go away, after stretching and moving around a bit. My doctor has prescribed Gabapentin 100mg at bedtime, but it does nothing. I do not like how the Gabapentin makes me feel. I don't know how to describe it, other than it makes me feel off balance emotionally. I've only taken the Gabapentin about a week and after reading some of the posts here, I will probably discontinue the drug and try some alternative solutions, like magnesium gel and frankincense oil. If there are others that are experiencing the same symptoms, I'd like to hear your comments.

Restless legs PM from Hyland’s
Helps me, at least most of the time.
I order on Amazon and take 2 when needed.
They dissolve under your tongue.
It’s worth a try, good luck.👍

I’m going to try this , too. Thank you! I took Ropinirole for 3 years. It is known to cause odd addictions such as gambling or sex. Without realizing what was happening, I spent almost 30% of my retirement funds on shopping!!!! Then I switched to Sinemet which does not work as well to stop the RLS and it causes dopamine related personality changes. I would be thrilled to find an alternative. May I ask if you have RLS every night or just occasionally? I now have it every time I am prone for more than a few minutes, day and night.

I too was on gabapentin. And lyrica. I didn’t have any helpfulness with either. I sometimes thought if I go back on it I want to try the other version like Horizontal.
I’m not sure if I spelled that right but if you look up gabapentin there are three other kinds.
I’ll know more in two weeks when I see the dr.
