PRP (platelet rich plasma) injection?

Posted by lgerkin @lgerkin, Mar 3, 2021

Has anyone had PRP injections? I have upper hamstring tendonitis and recently had a prolotherapy injection, which hasn't seemed to help, so I'm looking at other options. I know they're expensive and not covered by insurance but if the success rate is high, it's something I might consider. Thanks!

Good to know, thank you.
You’re right, it still isn’t a covered procedure. May I ask how many injections you received? My doctor suggests three, three months apart.

I am scheduled to have a PRP on my right knee on January 29, 2024. I called Medicare and was told that Medicare covers this injection. The injection will be done at the VA Hospital in Palo Alto, CA. The hyaluronic acid injection worked on my left knee but not my right knee, which is why I am having the PRP injection this month. Joe Galiardi

I was told Medicare does not pay. I had to pay out of pocket!

I had PRP for tendon tear. It has worked great and still pain free after 4 years. Then Sept 2023 I had tops of both feet done to relieve arthritis. Did great but about a year after, some pain in both feet, more in right, was noticed. But not as bad as the initial pain. I have to go back for a second round of PRP. which was expected.
Just have to avoid anything that fights inflammation for a couple months.
Highly recommend. It’s done while doctor is using ultrasound to see that he placing it he is placing it right in the affected area, My ortho won’t do it in backs at this time. Not comfortable using PRP there yet.

That’s great to hear. My orthopedic just isn’t confident doing it there yet. Possibly too many things to go wrong. Not sure.

I was told Medicare will not pay for prp injections. It has been recommended for tears in my right hip.

We paid $1000 a few years back. One session of PRP can address more then one site, if enough is left over in the syringe. Saved money on endless PT, imaging and appointments and eliminated pain in our case.

That's great it worked for you. I think it will be $800 but again Medicare will not pay. I was surprised that someone posted Medicare would pay for them. Happy they can get it through! Thank you for letting me know that it works and is worth the cost.

For my daughter it was worth the cost but everyone is different. Make sure you have an ethical provider. Her doctor was doing studies to prove the usefulness of PRP so she made sure that patients had a good chance of a strong response.
