Alcohol Withdrawal Program Required for Transplant

Posted by itsme623 @itsme623, Feb 26 1:06pm

I have been in the evaluation phase of a liver transplant for almost a year. I have had at least 5 hospital stays during this time for bacterial blood infections related to Whipple surgery 6 years ago. Also, most recently, my husband had a heart valve replacement. I have not yet completed a 12 to 24 hour alcohol withdrawal program that is required to be listed. My last alcoholic drink was over a year ago on January 5th, 2023, and I experienced no withdrawal. I have been searching very hard for an online program. I cannot find one that fits, including 3 that were recommended to me by Mayo. I need it to be online, a minimum of 12 hours, to receive a certificate of completion, and to be affordable. My husband and I are both in our 70s and are living on a retired income. I understand that we could fundraise, but it just doesn't sit well with either of us. I ought to be able to find what I need without that. Any suggestions?

Just as a follow-up to anyone looking to fulfill this requirement for getting on the list, I am currently taking enrolled at http://www.selfrecovery.org. It is an excellent program. I'm getting a lot out of it, especially the mindfulness sessions. Highly recommend it.

@itsme623, I'm thrilled that you found a program that suits your availability and access AND meets the requirements for transplant evaluation. I appreciate your returning to update the group and for members in the future who may be looking for such a program.

@itsme623, I’m so happy that you have been able to enroll into this program. And that you are already finding it to be helpful. I wish you continued success as you make progress toward a potential transplant.
Do you have routine labs drawn for the transplant team? Are you experiencing any liver symptoms?

Thank you so much! My labs have not been routine, per se. I've had them drawn often with lots of vials, but it doesn't seem like it's on any kind of routine. Brain fox is my big issue and at times it's worse than others. Lately, I've had renewed digestive issues that were originally helped with a gluden-free diet. In spite of that now, I'm getting issues again that came on suddenly last week. Since then, I have cut out oats (which I've come to love!) and some other things that could be making me sensitive to see how I do. Oh, like sweets are being eliminated too. I loved a gluten-free, sugar-free cookie after a meal. Bye bye cookie, or at least get back to ONE. LOL!

@itsme623, It's been a while since we've talked. So I'm wondering how yoiu are getting along? Are you having any success with calming the stomach issues? and Are you still pleased with the benefits of the mindfulness sessions?
I'm sending a big hug.

In the rooms is online and offers 130 meetings a week for AA, NA and other substance abuse support groups. You can easily document your attendance in their meetings and Mayo will accept that documentation.

I need to find an online program to satisfy 20 hour as required for liver transplant acceptance. I don't have transportation. I don't need detox. Just need to take an accredited 20 hour course for JAX Mayo. Please let me know if have any info or suggestions. Hopefully someone who has used this option can point me the right direction. Thanks!
