Want to hear from others who have Stage 4 Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)

Posted by anet @anet, Oct 21, 2019

My husband who is 75 is in stage 4 kidney disease according to his gfr. His last Gfr was 27. That sounds terrible to me, but his nephrologist says he is stable. He is not diabetic. His creatinine is 3.2, albumin 4.1. Phosphorus, sodium, calcium, potassium are all normal. His blood pressure is controlled by medication. He exercises by walking one and a half miles every day. He has two heart stents and takes cholesterol medicine. He has shortness of breath on occasion, but still does all of his normal activities like light yard work, fishing, dining out, going to church activities. I do think he sits too much, but try not to nag. He is not good about eating healthy, but is getting better. Maybe I am just worrying too much. Would like to hear from others in this stage of kidney disease.

@pakyun22 Absolutely! I use no salt seasoning in everything from cooking my eggs in a pan, to soup, to salads, to making turkey meatloaf! Play around with the different flavors that spices and herbs can bring to your dishes, and I bet you'll find them pretty tasty.

@maggieinfp Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect! Yep, that is another good salt-free condiment to use.

Do you deal with a restricted sodium diet?

@maggieinfp Ah, you may be one of the legions of Chronic Kidney Disease members here, then! Yep, low sodium, low potassium, low calcium, no processed foods, no phosphates, but keep that good protein coming in!

mrs dash flavoring
onion soupm64 oz is 2 boxes unsalted or no salt beef stock
3-4 onions cut in half and thinly sliced 3 tablespoons butter
3 tablespoons flour 1 tsp pepper to taste
melt butter med heat, add all onions, saute , not browned, stir 15 min, add flour and pepper to dissolve, add beef stock , stir, raise heat to high, once boiling reduce to low and simmer 15-20 minutes, yummy, enough for 4-5 days for me, I have 2 pieces of toast and break in mini pcs like croutons to fill me, add thin mozzarella or swiss cheese if allowed after soup is done, great for kidneys, put raw onions on sandwich or salads
