Request Suggestions: How did you find a living donor?

Posted by kzeiss @kzeiss, Oct 18, 2023

My son is in great need of a kidney transplant. How do you phrase a post for a living donor kidney request? Are there any sample requests that have worked? What kind so information do you include/not include? Any suggestions, advice or contacts for information are greatly appreciated.Thank you so much.

Thank you very much for your advice! I don’t really know what caused her kidney damage. I know that the working kidney has 25% function left.

@alive It can be a challenge to preserve as much function as possible. When you go over to the Kidney and Bladder support group, you will find discussions about working with impaired kidney function. Getting optimum results to maintain function, a person has to be very mindful about sodium, calcium, potassium, and phosphorous. And then there is the daily fluid intake, and appropriate protein intake for the kidney levels. It's quite the challenge. I hope your niece is being followed by a great nephrologist and renal dietician! Addressing the underlying cause of the kidney issue will also be a benefit.

I found out today that my 35-year old niece will need a kidney transplant by the end of the year. I don’t really know what caused her kidney damage or any other details. What can we do to find her a donor? We have shared the news with the immediate family. My niece was adopted, so I don’t know how that will affect her ability to find a match within the family.

In order for me to have a double lung transplant, I needed to have support at home. I would gather that it would be the same for all transplants. You might not be in as bas of shape as I was, but my surgeon wouldn't even proceed without meeting my main support person (who had to be at least 18 years old).
