Need help and advice. Where to stay for transplant review in JAX?

Posted by wendylsmith44 @wendylsmith44, Aug 7, 2019

Coming in to Jacksonville on August 14th. Gabriel house has a waiting list.

My best friend has been asked to arrive August 13th begin a 7 to 14 day process to receive a lung transplant. Not being able work due to illness we anticipated staying at Gabriel house and we found out they have waiting list.Everyone who said they would help has disapeard.

Is there any resources???
I'm frieghtented that without lodging that this means Kevin's chances at life are in jeopardy.
Plz message me as time is not on our side with any information. we live hours away and need to stay in Jacksonville for this process

Have you checked into Hope Lodge? It is right next to Gabriel House. I stayed there for 3 months last year after a bone marrow transplant. The place is beautiful and the people are wonderful.

We stayed at Marriott a few from main buildings during evaluation. We are now looking at Gabriel house for post transplant month. This is in jacksonville and I am on waiting list presently. Any information on Gabriel house would be great. Ty

@jmp1234, I don't have any first hand experience about the Gabrielle House of Care, however, I am sharing this link to information:
https://gabrielhouseofcare.org/
My husband and I stayed at the Gift of Life House while at Mayo Rochester. I was admitted to hospital upon arrival and my husband visited the GOL and took the required tour and learned the guidelines for staying there. I joined him there between hospitalizations since I was too sick to travel home. We were there 11 weeks in all, and would do it all over again.

Do you have any questions or concerns about what to expect with a transplant?

My wife ad I rented an Air B&B in Jacksonville Beach area that was 5 miles from Mayo Clinic for my Lung Transplant evaluation and approval processes for 18 days. It worked out great for us because it was pet friendly so we didn’t need to board our fur baby. As others have said ask for Mayo discount as well.
Hope this helps, and good luck!

Hi, @sidney073. Welcome to Connect. It is good to learn about a lodging option that has worked out well for you. Have you already completed the evaluation? Do you know what is next in the transplant process for you? How can we help you along the way?

As far as I know I have completed everything to be considered for addition to the Lung Transplant list. Everyone we have met with to review tests and procedures have said they see nothing to prevent my approval. Just waiting for the communication. We have my "Go Bag" all done, we have my wife's 75% to 80% done, I am keeping enough oxygen tanks to make the trip to Mayo and back home in case of a dry run. So we're trying to be proactive.

@sidney073, You sound just like my husband with your preparation and packed bag! And your wife sounds like me with additional items to be packed! Mayo in Rochester has gift shops and other shops that sell necessities if she or you forget something. One of the most often mentioned things that I remember members sharing as a necessity is a long phone charger cord!

Will you be traveling by car? Do you have far to travel?

That's helpful, @rlsob. Did you stay at the Hope Lodge as a transplant patient or cancer patient?

I stayed there after my transplant because I had to stay within 30 minutes of Mayo and I live about an hour and a half away.

That's good to know. I thought Hope Lodge was specifically for cancer patients. I'm so glad you posted.

Now, of course, I want to learn more about you. What type of transplant did you have? How are you doing?

We stayed at Marriott close to campus. Fortunate for good insurance to defray travel and lodging. Hth
