Stiff Heart - diastolic heart failure

Posted by evelyn247 @evelyn247, May 17, 2016

I have been diagnosed with "stiff heart" and would like to have as much information on this topic first hand. Any way to improve this conditions? What do I expect as it progresses?

Hello @susikelley,

I've been thinking about you and I wondering about your appointment with the new cardiologist. Did you get any helpful information? Has your treatment or diagnosis changed or were any new meds added?
I look forward to hearing from you.

Hi @annierae and I also welcome you. I just read your current situation, and the not being able to sleep lying down and the shortness of breath plus the feeling of water weight reminded me so much of what started my heart issues. I was having the same issue not being able to sleep lying down when I finally went to a hospital. Well, when they saw me and realized how bad I looked I was rushed into the trama section and the diagnosis was lots of water had built up around my heart and lungs which caused the shortness of breath. Well basically I was put on iv diuretics and after a couple of days of peeing, I was transferred to a cardiac hospital and was treated for an enlarged heart. It was explained that my heart was weakened by all the fluid and caused my heart to enlarge fighting against the fluid. Luckily my PCP at the time realized what was going on and called in a cardiologist that diagnosed the problem. Mine my ef dropped to 5 % and I ended up with meds and a pacemaker. At least with you it looks like your EF at 70 % your heart sounds like it's in better shape but like everyone else I would get another opinion.

Thanks, everyone! I did want you to know my internist called late the afternoon before last and they have made a referral to Mayo Clinic for me. I so appreciate everyone's responses and help. I'll let you know after my appointment (in Rochester) what's happened. Many thanks!

Hi Teresa (Volunteer Mentor@hopeful33250). I have a telephone appointment scheduled on Tuesday morning. I'm hopeful. I feel as if after sending them the discs and reports, if they felt it was tremendously serious, they would have asked me to make a trip up instead of scheduling a phone appt. So this is encouraging to me. I will drop back in to let you know what the result is. I can't say my symptoms are any better, however. Night before last I slept 14 and 1/2 hours from sheer exhaustion, last night, twelve and 1/2. ~Annierae

Hello. Well I found out that I have a stiff heart a hard way a few weeks ago I woke up and I was wheezing badly. I was a bit dizzy and felt a bit weak as well walking up any stairs knocked the wind out of me also had pain in both arms and shoulder s my husband took me to the hospital they immediately checked me to see if I was having an heart attack. My blood pressure was high the ecg showed no signs of anything bloodwork came back no heart attack they did a chest X-ray and found. Water in my lungs and chest. So they said I was having heart failure I was sent home with water pills saw a follow up dr a few days later they ordered a ultrasound on my heart. And I’m also having thyroid problems was st my endrincoligist yesterday he had access to my hospital records and he saw the echocharogram report he read it then said to me you have a stiff heart. So I’m waiting to hear back from the hospital to go back for a follow up appointment about this echocardiogram
