Thumping in right ear, only triggered by sound

This is a strange problem and difficult to explain so please bear with me here. This has been happening for almost 2 years now.

If both of my ears are completely exposed, 90% of the time I have no issues. Hearing is even on both ears. The other 10% of the time, certain midrange frequencies cause my right ear to thump along with the sound and usually only when they're pretty loud.

Now the main issue is that 100% of the time, if my right ear is partially covered for whatever reason (let's say I'm laying down on my side and part of it is covered, if I wear a hooded shirt over my head, or even if I put my hand over my right ear slightly), the thumping happens along with the sound. So let's say someone speaks a 4 syllable word, I'll get a thump with each syllable. Or if I'm hearing footsteps, each footstep causes a thump. This seems to happen along all frequencies (except maybe the very high ones). The weird thing is the thumping doesn't happen if I completely seal my LEFT ear. It'll only happen if my left ear is completely exposed and my right ear partially covered. It doesn't even have to be covered all the way. I can put my hand about 5 inches away from my ear and it'll trigger this problem.

I unfortunately can't afford to go to a ENT right now so I'm hoping someone has an idea about what's going on here. One thing probably worth mentioning is I've had acid reflux for 4 years. I actually went to an ENT because of pain all on my right side....my ear, throat, neck and head. He did an endoscopy but said he didn't see anything there to worry about, and thought acid reflux is causing my pain so he prescribed me some Ranitidine which I've been taking since then (just stopped a few months ago though). It did definitely help the ear pain when I began taking it but I did still have reflux episodes probably once a month throughout the 4 years. I'm thinking maybe this has caused some ear damage but I'm really not sure.

I appreciate any help I can get.

I literally experience the same exact thing but mines in my left ear. For years I have tried to explain it to Drs and they said it’s just allergies causing it but I’ve been doing allergy shots for 2 years now and it has not changed my ear. When I hear high pitched sounds my left ear will thump to the beat of the music and it’s so frustrating. It doesn’t hurt but I can’t pay attention to anything else when it does that because it won’t stop until the high pitched noise stops. I wish I could find out how to make this stop. It does not thump to my heart beat it only thumps to the beat of high pitched noise. Did you ever find out the cause of it and how to fix it?

I Googled my symptoms, and they exactly match what I've been experiencing for the past two months. My right ear has become sensitive to sound and feels full, with a sensation of air pressure. I hear what sounds like wind or an engine in the same ear for three days, then slowly all symptoms disappear, although sensitivity remains, particularly noticeable when people talk to me or when I speak, or even when dishes touch each other. Since then, my ear thumps to every sound with a particular frequency, like closing a door or dropping my phone. After two weeks, the same symptoms return for exactly three days, then disappear again, but the sensitivity persists and worsens over time. Last week, I experienced the same episode, and after three days, it disappeared, but the sensitivity remains, causing anxiety and stress in my life. I've been away from work and friends for about a month, which has made me very ill. I've seen five ENT specialists and undergone CT scans and MRI scans, all of which indicated that everything is fine with my ear. My new job has become searching online in the hope of finding a solution and treatment for myself. Does anyone have any ideas or experience with similar symptoms that could help?

I have been having the same issue for a couple years now. It seemed to start after I had COVID the first time. My left ear thumps with sound. If someone is sitting on my right side talking I hear the thumping in my left ear. If I hold the phone to my right hear I hear the thumping in my left ear. If I use an ear bud in my right ear I hear thumping in my left. It is so sensitive that while on the phone with my mother I heard the thumping when I heard her take a drag off her cigarette. Sometimes when it is absolutely quiet I still hear it or when I lay on my left side I hear it. It is very strange indeed and very distracting when someone is talking. I also feel pressure in the left ear at random times like it needs to be popped like I am in an airplane.

I started with this problem in Dec with a bout of Covid. It is not in synch with my heartbeat it is much faster and does not vary. I was diagnosed with Eustachian tube dysfunction. It seems to be related to both the cold and the weather / allergies. It is a tapping type sound. Ears were seriously plugged with pressure otherwise my exam and ears were normal. It seems to come and go. I can go weeks without it then something changes and it becomes a companion again.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread but I'm having the same issue and it's been giving me anxiety for a while now. For me, it is usually only in my right ear (like others here) but can rarely be triggered in my left ear. It's definitely the same thumping in response to sound, not pulsar tinnitus in response to my heart pumping blood. It mostly happens when I lie down to go to sleep at night and is actually usually triggered by sound in my left ear. So if I put a headphone in my left ear, my right ear drum will start periodically thumping. A headphone in the right ear does not usually cause the problem in my left ear. I'm glad to hear that it's not especially abnormal because I have health anxiety and have been very worried about it getting worse or indicating a more serious problem. Most niggling little things like this I can logically chalk up to hypersensitivity causing anxiety and vice versa, but even logically knowing that, the doubt always lingers.

Hi there everyone,

I have been dealing with this for at least 8 years I’m 41 now

I noticed it when laying in bed and my husband was snoring. Every time he would snore and I heard it in my right ear my left ear would do what I call a muted thump. It’s like I could feel it happen as well as my hearing would thump. It would only happen at a certain frequency.

I just ignored it for a few years and then decided to see an ent. I had everything check by him and my hearing is good not great.
He explained to me that there really isn’t much that can be done but did put my mind mind at rest. It is basically our inner ear having a spasm to noise. That makes sense to me as that’s exactly what it feels like. He has experienced this with other people and assured me it’s nothing to worry about but is annoying. Mine has come and gone over the years but it has started the last two mornings and unfortunately it’s when I speak now! If I saw word like where, the tone of the wh makes it happen. Thankful it only was in the morning and seemed to wear off
Good luck but try not to worry
