anyone have experience with a weighted vest to help build bones?
Hi! Just discovered this group. I stumbled across articles by Susan Brown,PHD, from Better Bones, Inc. She recommends wearing a weighted vest (which She sells) in order t build better bones. She also recommends and sells supplements . Does anyone have experience with her products? I have osteopenia and want to be proactive with my health. Thanks for your feedback. Deanna

I'm such a cynic about people who recommend things that they happen to sell, but that's MY problem. I have a weighted vest but haven't used it for long. I was SHOCKED by how heavy 10 lbs is and I removed half in order to feel as if I'm easing into this idea. I like the way it feels, but I don't know how valuable it is - it makes sense to me that it would be of good use. I'm interested in following to see what other more experienced people have to say,
I was cautioned by my rheumatologist that a weighted vest can cause spinal fractures. Sara Meeks, a Physical Therapist who specializes in osteoporosis also said this.
There are exercises online you can access for building bone, like stomping. You can also check out Dr. Loren Fishman's 12 Poses vs Osteoporosis (yoga) which has improved bone density in participants in his study.
I have been wearing a weighted vest with my endo’s recommendation. 3-4 pounds seems to be my comfort level, and I only wear it ~30 minutes for 2-3x daily. Recent months my neck and shoulders felt tight so I switched to wearing a backpack purse with weight in it and this seems more comfortable to me now. I’m on forteo so the Dexa improvement surely is mostly due to the med. Whether or not a weighted vest/backpack helps is hard to say, but I do feel adding weight to my light body is a good thing for bones and muscles in general.
I wouldn't wear one because of the extra stress on my (old) knees. I walk and lift weights, which stabilize my joints and helps with bone density and muscle mass. I also bike an hour or so a day, but that isn't resistance exercise so not as useful for bone density. I also woodturn (upper body work) which helps my arthritic hands (and my fingers have 6-pack abs now).
I try to wear an 8 pound weighted vest twice a week for a 30 minute brisk walk on hills. I weigh 125 lbs. and I feel stronger and empowered with the added weight. How can this be worse than lifting weights three times a week. I agree with you!
Thank you for your reply. This is overwhelming with all the options for adding weight bearing belts, vests etc., medications and supplements. It's also hard to know who the "honest merchants" are!! But at least we are doing something!

I'm looking into a weighted rucking backpack for brisk walking or trail walking. It is said that the hip strap could distribute weight to hips to reduce strains on shoulders and back. My only hesitation is that I don't need heavy weights as I'm only about 115lb, although the hip strap may allow a higher tolerable weight bearing.
@deanna1320 it is overwhelming indeed. Almost 2 years into diagnosis, I'm still reading a lot and modifying whats needed as new info comes around. Nutrition/supplements and proper exercises are important. Using a medicine if warranted. One day at a time..
