How do I know if we are accepted or denied by Internal medicine

Posted by millerrae0607 @millerrae0607, Jun 21, 2022

My husband applied for an appointment and filled out the questionnaire after the initial call a week ago. We have not heard anything yet even though the lady on the phone said we will be called back within 3 to 5 days. I wonder how long does it take Mayo to inform patients if they are accepted or denied and what is the next step if accepted? Can anyone share your own experience? Thank you.

@emo, I'm sorry to hear of your issues with scheduling at Mayo Clinic. We have been seeing ENT, Oncology, Thoracic Surgery and Urology in Rochester for 12 years now, are both on Medicare but when we started were on private insurance. Our experience has been that some specialties are much better at getting our appointments scheduled than others. My husband has had to be very persistent in dealing with Urology to find appointments in a timely fashion. Daily calls or portal messages can help on your part. Waiting days to get a call has never served us well. Good luck with your health and future healthcare.

Thanks. I agree about it being very dependent on the department. Currently, I’m being seen at Jacksonville, and they also don’t seem to operate the same way as Rochester, which may make a difference.

I think the unfortunate thing in my situation is that the clinic that’s supposed to be coordinating my care is very disorganized and not good with follow-up, so it ends up affecting all the rest of my orders and care in other departments. The way it is there, the clinic where the order originated has to schedule my appointment so 99% of things have to be handled through them, but they don’t seem to have the capacity to do it.

The portal also doesn’t help in this case because the messages don’t appear to get shared with my doctor and typically don’t get responded to. All the messages get forwarded to the nurse coordinator for the program I’m in, and I don’t think she can keep up with the messages. After my initial visit, I called and sent portal messages to her once a week for 6 weeks because of a huge scheduling problem that couldn’t be moved forward without it her, and I didn’t receive a response until I filed a grievance with the Office of Patient Experience.

I agree that waiting by the phone doesn’t usually work well, but when someone tells me: “I will contact your doctor to request access to schedule you, find out if this appointment can be done in person, and call you back to schedule,” is it so wrong to expect that person to call me back? I did call back a few days later, and after four calls with no answer, had to try again the next day. They had access to schedule, but there are no appointments available in the current scheduling template. So I was told to call again when the next slate of appointments opens up, but they can’t guarantee it.

And I get that, but this is for my “final” follow-up as part of the program I’m in… It’s supposed to be part of my series of appointments. I’m in one of the clinics that doesn’t allow follow-up after they finish their workup.

But thank you for your encouragement and listening to me vent >_<

I’ve kind of concluded it’s this clinic specially that’s overwhelmed, plus maybe it being Jacksonville’s systems?
