At what age do you stop driving?
I am 65 and since November 2023 I have had some pretty good health issues and have had cataract surgery. My daughter who does not live with me has been driving my car so if I needed to go somewhere her or one of my grandchildren would take me. So now she doesn’t really think I should be driving anymore because now I’m on oxygen. Do I give up driving and sell my car? What would you do?

@cathy58
You might want to take a driver’s training course. I think that would give you even more confidence. We can never learn too much or be too safe.

i'm not going to tell anybody to stop driving. it's not my place to say that. but with that said. a lot of people here are forgetting about the situation with @cathy58. and why her daughter is concerned about her driving now that she is on oxygen. you are not put on oxygen for nothing. many reasons & factors go into being put on oxygen. 1 main reason is lack of oxygen to the brain. lung problems. don't forget the oxygen gets to the brain through the blood. and actually Cathy did not give a reason for being on oxygen. so, please remember these things when advising what she should or should not do.
I am 75 and driving. Everyone I know still drives. Cataract surgery improved my ability to drive safely at night. If I am going out for a late night event in the city or during holiday traffic I take Uber or Lyft. I can have a cocktail without worry. There is a lot of life yet to live. I am sure your daughter means well. However it is your decision as to how you choose to live. You are in charge. Best of luck with your journey.
And insurance company gives a discount for three years for taking Safe Driving Course!!!!
I don’t think age has the last word on that. People are all different. My wife had her license turned in in her mid 70’s because she kept rear ending people and we discovered it was dementia and the brain had lost some of its functions.
A friend had a mom that was 99 and when I asked how she was doing he said she spent most of her time driving old people to their dr appointments. True.
I’m 80 and drive 25-40k a year plus still ride my Honda Goldwing even though I had it converted to a trike last year to prevent tip overs at red lights or on parking lots where they usually happen. Sometimes you decide when to quit and sometimes if there’s viable evidence others decide for you. To me the unenforced traffic laws are the culprit we face everyday we get on the road. People drive like idiots way beyond their ability to react in a situation. Everyday in my metro area people pass me on the expressway in excess of 100mph weaving in and out of traffic. We have a lot of fatalities and life crippling wrecks now and the people that cause these fatalities in my humble but accurate opinion are just as guilty of murder as if they shot someone….. BUT….they get a ticket or a small fine and go on with their careless and thoughtless path of destruction in life while the victim, someone’s very heart, lies in the ground somewhere. That’s why we need enforcement and punishment to match the offense instead of speed traps to ticket someone doing 48 in a 45mph zone.
Sorry, dunno how I got into all that but I’m just a little passionate about some clowns putting my loved ones at risk.
This thing about age....your birthday number is just a general guideline. Obviously a 100-year-old person does not have the body of a 20-year-old!
But physical and mental abilities have many other factors that make a much bigger difference than number of years arrived at.
Genetics, how well you took care of yourself, diseases, will power, brain capacity and if you stimulate your brain. One of my Mayo doctors put in his notes that I was "incredibly vigorous" and I am 82.
Interesting the study that reported that people who are bilingual before the age of 30 have a five-year delay in the onset of dementia.
And I could point to much younger people who shouldn't be driving because they are irresponsible!!!!
I tell all my doctors that when one turns 80, it doesn't mean that one falls off a cliff.
You are correct!! I think I let this disease and fears of getting sick dictate my life. I need to just bite the bullet and start doing the things I use to do like Drive.
Really?? Cause I have a very good driving record and have never been given a discount.
Thank you
I appreciate your comment
You’re right I never did say why. But it’s because I have severe copd/ emphysema. Even with oxygen when I am moving around exerting my self I get very SOB and need help getting around. So she wants someone to take me just incase I run into trouble and need help.
I guess I’m just afraid of losing my independence, but I totally get where she is coming from. If I have a hard time at home doing anything I would hate to see if I went out by myself.
I appreciate everyone’s feed back.
