What can I eat?

Posted by ldrlaw @ldrlaw, Sep 10, 2023

I am enjoying Minute Maid’s zero sugar, mango passion drink. It has no sugar, 20 mg of sodium, a bit of potassium, but no phosphates. It also contains aspartame, but you have to choose your battles.

From a diet perspective there are some basic rules that I follow (I am in Stage 3, but have been holding constant around GFR 35) for 3 years, and they are: low sodium, low potassium, low phosphates, high quality proteins, good fluid intake while maintaining a balanced diet. Your nephrologist or renal dietician can provide guidance on the daily intake amounts you should follow. For example I limit my daily sodium intake to 800-1200mg per day when possible. Hope this helps!

I lost my left kidney to cancer. I'm late stage 3. I've had a heart attach, and I have Lymn desease. What on earth am I supposed to be eating? I feel fine, just don't know what to eat . to try and stay as healthy as I can.

@dogslaugh Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect! It can truly be a dilemma figuring out just what is okay to eat when you have multiple health concerns that need addressing diet-wise, isn't it!?

Just this week I got an email from DaVita, one of the two biggest kidney care organizations. They happened to have an article that you may find interesting and informative: http://www.davita.com/education/ckd-life/heart-healthy-advice-for-people-with-kidney-disease
I hope the link works okay.

Let me know what you think, will you?

@ldrlaw That sounds pretty good! How often do you drink that? Personally I am a fan of crushed ice and water. Sometimes I add a packet of True Lemon or True Orange for flavor.
