Tooth pain and Neuropathy
Every evening my front teeth, top and bottom, become very sensitive, like a toothache. Within a few hours my feet begin tingling, throbbing-classic neuropathy pain.
Could this be related? I have my first set of appointments at Mayo next week for this, and other pain issues. I am really hoping for answers.

Hello @jayneedbj, Welcome to Connect, an online community where patients and caregivers share their experiences, find support and exchange information with others. It's good to hear you have an appointment at Mayo next week to find the cause of your tooth pain. The symptoms sound similar to those of Trigeminal Neuralgia. I wasn't familiar with tooth pain caused by neuropathy but I found an article that talks about it occurring after dental treatment which may be unrelated in your case. Here's the abstract and the article linked at the end:
"The head and neck regions are the most common sites of the human body to be involved in chronic pain conditions. Neuropathic pain is a chronic pain condition, and refers to all pain initiated or caused by a primary lesion or dysfunction or transitory perturbation in the peripheral or central nervous system (CNS). Trigeminal neuralgia, atypical odontalgia (phantom tooth pain), burning mouth syndrome, traumatic neuropathies, postherpetic neuralgias and complex regional pain syndrome are neuropathic pain conditions in the orofacial region that can be encountered in pain and dental clinics. The majority of the time this problem is misdiagnosed by the dentist, which can lead to unnecessary treatments. These treatments may include endodontic treatment and extraction of the tooth or teeth in the region. In this review, only post-traumatic peripheral pain neuropathies seen after dental treatments will be discussed." --- Neuropathic pain after dental treatment: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/23588863/
You might want to plan your visit and write down your questions for the doctors at Mayo - they love it when a patient advocates for their own health! Here's a site with some tips and tools to help you plan your visit - https://patientrevolution.org/visit-tools
You mentioned wanting answers for the tooth pain and other pain issues at your appointment next week. Can you share what other pain issues you are having and let us know what you find out at your appointment?
Thank you, I will post a follow up!
I have been dianosed with Peripheral Neuropathy and I am recovering one from diabetes. My a1c is 5.9 blood gulcouse is 106. I don't have burning in mouth just dry mouth issues and strange feeling in mouth. Per my Deniest i have no problems gum or teeth issues
I had type 2 Diabetes 2 years ago. my A_C was 15.98 my Gulose was 600 amost dies. Went to work and lost 79 lbs. NOw mt AC is 5.5 and glouse is 106. I was dismissed from Adult Encorngy in march 2022. Now i Have Peripheral Neuropathy and haveing problems with teeth, dry mouth and strange feeling around upper teeth on right side. Been to OMS dental surgry and the DR says teeth and gums great shape. Refered me to a Neurologist said nothing dental wise can be done. Any feed back will be apprecieated
My upper teeth ache when my CIPN acts up. Started 6 years when treated with Venclaxata for NHL
I was diagnosed with small fiber neuropathy in 2004 and in the past few years it started affecting my hands and arms. In 2017 I started having dental pain affecting all my teeth, starting after I ate. Initially my teeth would ache for an hour or so after eating. Then they started to sting. Now different teeth sting and often this isn't after eating or drinking. One orthodontist said I might need to have root canals done in most of my teeth! I had one unneccessary one done years ago without resolving the pain in that tooth.
So finally I am asking if anyone has a similar symptom with their neuropathy. I don't have the best teeth but I do take care of them and visit the dentist as directed so no uncared for issues and no one seems to know what this is about - dentist or physician.
My teeth and jaws started to hurt a few weeks ago. This didn't happen during my treatment for cancer the first time around and this second cancer it has been 4 months and suddenly my jaw and teeth hurt.Dentist said it was due to the drugs and to rinse out my mouth with a little bit of salt in some water several times a day and it helps tremendously.
I had shingles on my face, right side in nose and mouth and lower eyelid. Months later I still have neuropathy in my nose (itching, pain, and liquid sensation) and numbness in my teeth on that side. The trigeminal nerve pain was by far the worst I’ve ever experienced—through the crown, out the ear, like electrical fire in half of my head. Undiagnosed pernicious anemia has left me with neuropathy in my feet, legs, hands, unable to walk without assistance. But nothing comes close to the pain of trigeminal neuropathy. You have my sympathy!
I was diagnosed with small fiber neuropathy a few years ago. I don’t have tooth pain (thank goodness) but I’ve had tongue and mouth pain for years, sometimes with small blisters and sores. I saw an ENT when there was a discussion about doing a tongue biopsy for Sjögren’s syndrome. That didn’t happen, but he confirmed that I was not making enough saliva. He prescribed Pilocarpine 5 mg three times per day prn. I actually saw him before my SFN diagnosis, so I’ve been taking the Pilocarpine for 3-4 years.
I’m telling this rambling story in case there might be some dry mouth issues contributing to tooth pain. I had years of dry mouth issues to report to him, and he confirmed decreased saliva by pressing on my salivary glands. He was much more helpful than my dentist.
Good luck!
I have a similar issue never given a diagnosis a lot of numbness in legs and feet occasional carpel tunnel. Then back in summer of 2023 had this severe electrical pain in my rib cage so bad went to the hospital. After several hours of testing told me I had covid didn't know it were no symptoms like fever or breathing issues but read up on it and it can effect the lining of the lungs between the ribs and the lung. That went away until December when I had a severe intestinal virus now got shooting nerve pains in my intestines. But anyway I've had dry eyes and mouth with sores at the jaw line where they meet. They biopsied them never came to a conclusion. Through research I had my doctor test me for a genetic problem where you lack the intestinal conversion of B vitamins and I had one of the genetic for that. Years ago I started taking B vitamins and it built up in my system. Since I stopped taking B vitamins and started taking the metabolic processed Folate to help convert B12 and B6. A lot of the numbness in my legs and feet have gone away throat is much less dry eyes not much of a change.
