Calcium Supplements

Posted by tjmjsjwj @tjmjsjwj, Dec 29, 2023

I'm starting a conversation on the best calcium supplements to help offset prednisone. Let's discuss which ones are the best for the stomach biome, which ones you are taking, etc. I have not been taking any calcium supplements but am going to start. I'm wanting to do some research first.

What is K2?

K2 prevents damage to the blood vessels and helps with coagulation. K2 works together with D3 to support healthy bones.

I take D3/K2 and a calcium carbonate antacid either Rolaids or generic Pepcid daily. Weight bearing exercise
and movement still very important for osteopenia prevention.Vitamin D has multiple benefits and level can be lower in Northern winter climates.

Recommended daily allowance of calcium varies from country to country and is different for women and men in some countries. For women over 65, in the UK it is 700mg of dietary calcium a day, in Japan it's 600mg, in Australia where I am it is 1300mg, in the US it is 1200mg.

I use calcium citrate. Citralcal. For 30 years.

If you cannot eat enough foods to get your calcium I would like to suggest taking a supplement. I take Life Extension Calcium with K2. And I also take D3.

I agree. I take Calcium D3 plus K2-M7 which apparently is the vitamin that directs to the bones. That a very over-simplified explanation. Following is the explanation but you can google it and get the same information from various websites:

I have been on prednisone for 3 years and taking calcium with vitamin D since menopause, about 25 years. Recently a spinal fracture was seen on an x ray and three specialists have told me to stop taking calcium. Told me to take 1200 mg of vitamin D. Also eat a calcium heavy diet. Also starting on Forteo and having an MRI prior to consult with a spine surgeon to see what if anything can be done for the fracture. My recent DEXA Scan was good but they still insist on me taking a med due to long term steroid use and a fracture. Prednisone is not our friend but allowed me to be mobile.
