Chronic Post nosal drip Complication

Posted by anna17X0X @anna17xox, Jan 20 10:29pm

hello , I have had post nasal drip for a couple years now it started since I was around 14 or 13 I think back in 2018 around the time of the Covid -19 outbreak. I'm now 17,And I don't know how I developed it or why I developed it it just somehow happened to me. And I have seen my doctor about it, I've tried nasal sprays ,saline solutions as recommended but they only provide a temporary solution. They don't really help as much I notice the symptoms will ease up for while but come back after a while. I even drink plenty of water and warm fluids to thin out the mucus. But It seems like it never goes away no matter what I do. My doctor told me what I think the cause is and honestly I don't know and I'm still trying to figure out what's causing this and don't think it's allergies but it could be. But I do notice my post nasal drip gets worst during cold seasons, so that's when I usually use nasal sprays the most. I think it even causes my brain to feel a little fuzzy sometimes, and can give me headaches .Sometimes I'll try to spit the mucus out to keep it from congesting my throat but it causes a metallic taste and unpleasant odor in my mouth . So I sometimes swallow it to avoid that, and frankly im just so sick of it .I think I might have some kind of sinus or bacterial infection I don't know what's wrong with my nose. I want to consult with my doctor about other treatment options but my mom thinks I'm overreacting and that it'll go away on it's own. But it hasn't, it's been years since I have had this problem and I desperately want it to go away .Right now seeing a doctor isn't really an option because my mom doesn't think it's that bad and refuses to schedule an appointment for me. I don't know what to do I'm thinking about going back to using nasal irrigation once a day because I only used it once the first time I tried it. Didn't see much of a difference so this time I'll try using it once a day and also consider getting a humidifier. But apart from that I really think I need some serious medical treatments because this has been plaguing me for way too long and right now my head feels uneasy from swallowing this mucus And please if you also suffer from Chronic Post nasal drip ,and have may have a clue as to what's causing it and what treatments or remedies you use that might work for me please let me know ,I would really appreciate it.

Sorry your mom isn't coming around yet, Anna. An ENT is definitely where you should be headed. In the meantime, more frequent nasal rinsing with saline (and distilled water) is a very good move in general, especially in the winter. Last year my allergist addressed my constant throat clearing from post nasal-drip by having me try AstePro nasal spray. You can buy it over the counter. It's an antihistamine that you can use in addition to any tablets you might be taking such as Claratin or Zyrtec, and it is known for helping with post nasal drip. I can't say it helped me a lot, tbh, but if that's one of its best known effects, you may as well try it. It's about $15-20. Also, a doctor friend with bad allergies recommends Mucinex as well, although it will make you want to cough up the stuff. Regular gargling with warm salt water will help with bad tastes in your mouth or buildup of bacteria in the throat/tonsils that can cause nasty bad breath. Big hug from a grandma!

Thank you for your advise I will try to see if my mom can get me to go see an ENT ,as well as trying out the nasal spray .I also have a question for you,if you dont mind me asking, how long have you had nasal drip for ?

I've been being treated for allergies for about 25 years (I am almost 60). Post-nasal drip has always been a part of that to some degree, but it has gotten worse the last few years. I relocated some years back to a more allergy-prone region, so that could be a related reason. (Note: Earlier I suggested AstePro nasal spray, which is over the counter. Another responder told you she uses azelastine spray when things are bad for her. They are the same thing: one is a brand name OTC and the other is a generic Rx.)

I suddenly developed postnasal drip a few months ago. My doctor doesn’t know why and it’s been getting worse. I was recently prescribed Flonaze. You can get it over the counter. So far it has been working well. Wishing you all the best.

tricia7,i have also been prescribed this same medication before but I stopped using it because it wasn't really working that well. The drip would stop for a few minutes and come back and i was tired of re-using it every 15 minutes so I just got rid of it and used the "allergy nasal mist" nasal spray from CVS which lasts a little longer and is cheaper.

i had post nasal drip for years. a few years ago i was diagnosed with Chronic Sinusitis. then i found out i had nasal polyps. went in and had surgery twice each nostril to remove them. after that my ENT prescribed Dupixent 300mg/2L every two weeks. to keep the polyps cleared up. works great. but i still have CS. which i believe has no real cure. but the Dupixent and Ipratropium Bromide Nasal Solution helps make it more bearable. the solution is a Nasal Spray prescription and you can get both from an ENT or an Allergist. good luck, d
