Weight Loss Surgery?

Posted by cjberg62 @cjberg62, Dec 22, 2023

My physician has recently suggested weight loss surgery. I have Diabetes Type 2, Severe Sleep Apnea and High Blood Pressure. I am 70lbs overweight. Everyone I have talked with don't think I need the surgery, but my doctor is really pushing it for me, as she believes I will be able to get off all medications and Insulin and CPAP. What do you all recommend.

Thank you
For your honesty, I appreciate it. Not sure what I’m going to do,but I am weighing out the pros and cons.
Thanks again

Please research and look into all options. I was desperate to lose weight and nothing was working for me. In 2009 I had lap band surgery and went from 285 to 135. In 2019 I had the lap band removed due to complications and had transition to gastric sleeve. I’ve almost lost my life multiple times with severe electrolyte abnormalities and overall poor health since that surgery. I spent all last year on a feeding tube because of severe gastroparesis and my stomach was not working. I was told my only option was to have transition to modified gastric bypass to “bypass” the area that wasn’t working. I had that done 12-27-22… postoperative my GI system completely shut down and they were going to send me home on hospice (I had just turned 48 at the time) and I was ready to go. After a few weeks I started getting a little better, but it’s been 2 years of complete living hell. Now I can’t even tolerate tube feeding and have to have IV nutrition. I’m in and out of the hospital all the time which makes it very difficult to continue to work as a full time RN. I have an upcoming appointment with GI Clinic at Mayo and I’m praying that they can offer me a treatment to get my life and health back.

I don’t say all of this to scare you. There are a lot of people who do wonderful with weight loss surgery, but there are some who regret it every day.

Ozempic, Trulicity, Mounjaro. Two newer GLP-1= Saxenda and Wegovy. And the newest is Zepbound (tirzepatide) injection.
I'd take the drugs before even thinking about surgery. ALL the people I know that took some of those are doing fabulous!!!

I have over 35 years in healthcare.
Had the sleeve in 2013. Lost 140 lbs. Keeping it off.

I had the gastric bypass and I am all for it however now they have other medications available for weight loss (and T2 diabetes) they did not have when I hasld decided on surgery. Please research the T2 diabetes medication Mounjaro which works awesome for my A1C but also is a weight loss medication that works awesome for most and it now approved for weight loss (Called Mounjaro for T2 diabetes and Zepbound for weight loss). If this was out in 2016 I would have never had WLS. I wish you all the"best!!

My doctor recently put me on Mounjaro and I gained weight. I have trouble with water retention and water pills don't do anything for me. I was so excited to start it so I could lose weight and all it did was make me feel more depressed. One reason why I want to have the surgery.

Ahh I am very sorry to hear that! 😢 it definitely does not work for all but hopefully you can find what works for you! Are ypu working towards getting approved for WLS?

I just want to get off the medications I am on and want to feel better about myself. I have had surgery for a hernia in the past and I believe I had my esophagus stretched due to choking on food a lot. I haven't had any problems with that since then. I am hoping to have the Roux en Y done.
