NTM and CBD oil or cannabis

Posted by kristin123 @kristin123, Dec 22, 2017

Hi! I'm new here. So glad to have found you all! I was diagnosed a year and a half ago and chose not to treat with antibiotics at present. Has anybody tried CBD oil? Apparently there have been some studies on treating tuberculosis. Thanks!

Hi Kristin and welcome to Connect.
I haven't heard much about the use of CBD oil and the treatment of lung infections. Here's an article from Bronchiectasis News Today that provides a bit more insight.

Do you have MAC or bronchiectasis or both? There are several members in the group who have not yet had to treat with antibiotics, like @boomerexpert and @windwalker.

Kristin, Have your doctors suggested antibiotics yet?

@kristen123, Hello Kristen, and welcome to our forum. There must have been something about CBD for treating lung diseases in the paper or on the news because my husband mentioned it to me yesterday. I have not looked into it myself, but apparently it works for many other kinds of ailments as well. I opted out of taking the three antibiotics too. I was diagnosed in 2005 with mac. My current doctor doesn't believe in prescribing the big three, his method of treatment is alternating one antibiotic every other month using a different antibiotic on the off month. This method seems to be working for me so far. I get the feeling that different doctors have different ideas on how to treat MAC, and who knows which is the best way. I have been on this regimen since 2013. I have steadily been improving. Do you know if you have an active mac infection now?

It seems that inhaling any substances into your lungs could only cause irritation and make things worse.

@suenfl, if you decide to try the cannabis, I'd recommend staying away from smoke or vaping. Do the edibles instead. Your lungs need to stay clean to be healthy. No smoke of any kind is ever o.k.

I posted here because I have bronchiectasis and MAC.

I have bronchiectasis and MAC in addition to Rheumatoid Arthritis. My bronchiectasis is getting worse. My pulmonologist mentioned 2 years of antibiotic therapy with Rifampin, Azithromycin and Etambitol. I am very hesitant to start this but my Shortness of Breath is getting much worse. Can anyone share that is doing this or not doing this?

Yes. I use medical marijuana and it has turned my life around. Diagnosed in 2017, I tried the big 3 antibiotics. Made me very ill. I use THC. I am 69, and I have been outside burning trash in high 90s heat this week with no problems. So for me marijuana was definitely the answer. Haven't used antibiotics in 5 years!

I have MAC, am on the big 3 and also use CBD and THC but not every day. Just when I need it. I don't have any interactions and I find it helps with overall wellness.
