Want to hear from others who have Stage 4 Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)

Posted by anet @anet, Oct 21, 2019

My husband who is 75 is in stage 4 kidney disease according to his gfr. His last Gfr was 27. That sounds terrible to me, but his nephrologist says he is stable. He is not diabetic. His creatinine is 3.2, albumin 4.1. Phosphorus, sodium, calcium, potassium are all normal. His blood pressure is controlled by medication. He exercises by walking one and a half miles every day. He has two heart stents and takes cholesterol medicine. He has shortness of breath on occasion, but still does all of his normal activities like light yard work, fishing, dining out, going to church activities. I do think he sits too much, but try not to nag. He is not good about eating healthy, but is getting better. Maybe I am just worrying too much. Would like to hear from others in this stage of kidney disease.

Hi @anet. I hope your husband continues to be doing ok. Coming in a little late on this thread but wanted to tell you I have been Stage 4 for over 24 years. I just turned 60. I am not on dialysis but my function continues to slowly deteriorate. I recently got accepted for the transplant list hoping for a new kidney before I progress to Stage 5. As of now, I'm able to work and pretty much live my life as I please except for all the doctor, transplant center and lab appointments. Fatigue is my enemy so I try not to overdo it. So, of course, you're worried, but keeping a positive attitude, will go a long way for both of you.

I am amazed at how long you have been at stage 4. Have you done anything to stay there? I am 61 stage 4 and they are talking like dialysis is imminent. I am praying I can stay stage 4 for the rest of my life

I am 63 stage 4. For the past 4 years I have bounced between stages 3 & 4. My GFR has been between 14 - 42. I’ve been evaluated, approved & accepted for kidney transplant by 2 transplant centers. I am inactively listed with Mayo in Rochester, MN. They say that I’m currently “too healthy for transplant”. I’ve also been looking for a living kidney donor but haven’t found one yet. My advice to you is to do everything your medical team says you need to do to take the best care of yourself that you can. Then leave it all in God’s hands. Keep praying!

Yes, I moved from stage 4 to stage 3 and I attribute it to prayer by my church and a kindney suppliment. I am speculating the suppliment helped my kidneys function at their maximum. i was getting prepped to go into dialysis but my doctor has moved me back to "stable" and changed my appointments to every 4 months for a checkup. See my earlier posts for the kidney cleanse. I've had two nearly identical tests with creatinine at 2.2 and 2.4 from a progression to 3.1.

Are you referring to the kidney supplement by Synergetic?

Have you or anyone heard that baking soda helps CKD??

My husband is CKD stage 4 and his nephrologist told him to use 1 tsp/day baking soda, or be prescribed medication. The purpose was to balance the body ph to lessen the burden on the kidneys. So far, labs are stabile.

I take sodium bicarbonate ..3, 3 times a day=9, Need more than usual because I have no colon. It helps. Baking soda works same way. I get 800 for 18.00 dollars. Pills are a bit hard to swallow. Check doc..it is for acidity build-up..
