Mother prescribed Haldol and has declined rapidly. Very concerned

Posted by rbridge2_ @rbridge2_, May 13, 2018

My mother was recently Moved from a nursing home facility to a psychiatric facility because of symptoms related to Parkinson’s disease. They immediately put her on Haldol and she has declined rapidly. I am very concerned for her health and well-being I would appreciate any feedback anyone has. Thank you

Hello @rbridge2_

I am glad to see that you have joined our Parkinson discussion group. I am so sorry to hear of your mother's decline and I can understand your concern. I am not familiar with Haldol. Do you know why they prescribed Haldol for your mom? Did she have a change in symptoms that indicated the need for Haldol?

In order to put your mind at ease, have you considered getting a second opinion regarding this change in her meds?

I look forward to hearing from you again.

My mother suffered from ua's and would become very agitated and confused. When she was admitted to the hospital they prescribed haldol and I became very concerned after reading the FDA labeling that would be given to patients if they would be filling a prescription.
Also saw a decline in my mother's personality after taking this medication and after she was discharged from the hospital I called her primary MD and discussed with him my concerns about this medication. We both deceided that she would be taken off this medication.I firmly believe that we must advocate for our family members and be willing to discuss our concerns etc with their health care providers.

Hi, @rbridge2_ and @magerter ,
I wanted to add my welcome to @hopeful33250's, @rbridge2_, and I also wanted to welcome @magerter. I applaud the fact that both of you are advocating for your mothers who have been prescribed Haldol (Haloperidol). You know them best, and as @magerter mentioned, willingness to discuss concerns about your family member with their health care providers is important.

I'd also like to invite into this discussion Connect members who have mentioned Haldol (Haloperidol) to offer their insights on this medication: @jean63 @kateia @conniesue2017 @user_che69bc66 @troubleshooter @mindy62 @angiem @nikki655 @calmcoolandcrazy @randalcoon.

@rbridge2_ -- how has your mother been doing over the past couple days since you posted?

@magerter -- you mentioned your mother is now being taken off the Haldol (Haloperidol). Is she being put on another medication instead?

Hello @magerter

I would also like to thank you for posting about your mom's medication concerns and I also applaud you for being an involved family member. Senior citizens need an advocate and you are filling that role for your mom.

I would also be interested in hearing how your mom is doing without the Haldol and if another med was given in it's place.

I look forward to hearing from both you and @rbridge2_

I'm sorry I haven`t responded to your comments sooner. My mother was not given any other medication after Haldol. My mother passed away 6 months after her last hospitalization at age 96.
