Ulcerative colitis, gastritis, GERD, reflux
Hi all, first post here.
I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis in 2009, and I had been able to keep it under control with Liadla and Canada. Fast forward 4 years to 2013, I started to get some horrible esophagus spasms/GERD/indigestion...you name it. I tried just about everything over the counter, natural remedies, and even a few prescription drugs, until my doctor finally prescribed me 80mg's of Nexium, which eventually worked. I was able to reduce that amount to 40 mg's a day, even tried a few times going down to 20 mg's a day(over the counter) of nexium.
After a setback with UC, I am now on Humira, Uceris, still on Lialda and Canasa, along with trying different probiotics and glutamine.
Within the past few months, I've been getting a very sour or metallic taste in my mouth. After an endoscopy, 2 months ago, my doctor said there was some mild gastritis going on.
Now, within the past week or two, the bad taste seems to be getting worse and much more consistent, with some minor burning in my throat, along with discomfort in my upper stomach. I can feel things going downhill, and I'm sure my doctor is going to double my nexium intake. Ever since I started the Nexium, my weight has been dropping considerable, and I've had a difficult time putting it back on.
Not sure what to expect in response, I guess, for a long time, I've been worried about the affects of Nexium long term, but at this point, not sure I have a choice.
Was wondering if surgery were an alternative, what's out there, and does surgery eventually eliminate the need for these PPI drugs?
Thanks

There could be many explanations… You’re right and it could be your blood pressure medication. Initially, my dad was getting dizziness upon standing, and it turned out he was taking too much. His cardiologist reduced the dose and ultimately recommended regularly checking his BP, and if it was low enough, then he didn’t need to take the medication.
Can you ask your pharmacist to look at your meds and tell you if any have this side effect?
It could also be hydration. I have POTS, which causes dizziness when changing positions and one of the main treatments is increasing blood volume with hydration and salt (if possible).
If it seems to be neither of those, could you talk to your doctor about getting tests or ask their opinion?
Thanks so much. I believe it is my iron levels and yes, hydration too!
Good morning. I too have uc and Gerd. I also have dysautonomia and just started taking meds to higher my bp. They make me dizzy but work. You should definitely discuss the dizziness with your pcp as well as gi dr. They may go to run some tests Always a good idea to keep drs in the loop. Good luck to you! Feel better soon. 😊☀️
Dizziness or light headedness upon standing from a sitting or supine position can be low BP, dehydration, side effect of meds? Easiest treatment is to sit up first and stay seated from a supine position until your blood has made its way to your brain. From a sitting position stand up holding onto a chair or wall and remain still before moving until your blood has made its way to your brain. You might google the meds you’re on the see if they carry a side effect of dizziness too. If it persists contact your doctor. You might check your BP too if able and keep a record to compare.
Take care 💅
Hello I’m a 28 year old man who has been battling illness for sometime, my symptoms include waking up very tired and having a discomfort in my throat as if the food wants to come out, 20 minutes after every meal I feel so malaise and nauseas which overwhelming after 2 hours that goes away, I feel light headed everyday with vertigo also when I drive the vertigo goes away, please help me, I also have sleep problems
Start by seeing your PCP doctor. He'll probably start by running some tests to see which specialist to send you.
Hello my name is Diane. I have most of the same symptoms. The ones where you feel something in your throat it has taken me years to figure out my problem. With me my esophagus is sluggish and food wants to sit there. Mine is complicated by the fact that I don’t drink anything while I eat. So now I make sure I drink after I eat until I feel..and I can feel all the food is out of my esophagus. It causes terrible symptoms. I cannot eat and go to sleep at night it goes into my wind pipe so I eat earlier in the evening. Hope this helps. Diane.
Have you seen Dr about this? I have something called Mals in addition to some esophageal issues. I take meds that help. But my gi prescribed them. Also I take Mylanta for break through. Always best to see I dr first with onset of new symptoms. Good luck to you!!!!😊🙏🏻😊🙏🏻
What are the drs saying? Do you feel malaised?
