The newest weight loss medication, Wegovy (Semaglutide) came on the market in June 2021 and demand for the medication has been high. This medication, a once weekly injection, had excellent results in clinical trials showing weight loss of up to 15% body weight. It is recommended for adults with a BMI of > 30 or a BMI of > 27 plus weight related health concerns. It should be noted that Wegovy is recommended to be utilized long term for ongoing weight management.
The most common side effect of Wegovy is nausea (often due to feeling more full when starting this medication), but there are other side effects as well including:
- Diarrhea
- Vomiting
- Constipation
- Stomach (abdomen) pain
- Headache
- Tiredness (fatigue)
- Upset stomach
- Dizziness
- Feeling bloated
- Belching
- Gas
- Stomach flu
- Heartburn
If you are started on Wegovy and experience nausea, it is recommended that you contact your health care provider for guidance. In addition, you can try eating bland, low fat foods, avoid lying down after you eat, eat more slowly, and increase your water intake (including foods with water like soup and gelatin) if feeling dehydrated.

I just started my 3rd week on Wegovy. I’ve been short of breath and extremely fatigued - feeling depleted- since I’ve started and I think the fatigue (feeling drained when I move around) is getting worse.
Any advice?

Welcome to Mayo Connect. There are side effects to Wegovy. Everyone reacts differently.
What dosage are you on, it may need to be adjusted.
If you have not talked to your provider about your side effects I suggest you reach out seeing you mentioned side effects were getting worse.

Hi Laurie
Thanks for responding!
I’ve spoken with my PCP but she’s not very helpful.
Not sure how much she knows about these drugs.
Sometimes I’m fine, then not. I need more specific guidance on what to eat/not eat. Like I thought unsweetened Almond Milk would be ok but I think it made me feel badly. Not neasous, just tired. The same later today with canned tuna fish. I thought both would be ok but it appears not. So basically I don’t really know what to eat aside from peanut butter.
Any suggestions appreciated.
Thanks Colleen. I’ll check it out.
I would recommend trying to drink 64 oz fluid per day, water being the best choice, but other low-calorie beverages are ok too. Small, frequent meals are better tolerated on Wegovy such as a yogurt/cottage cheese and fruit, egg with a slice of toast, soup, protein smoothies.
