Maikki was 32 years old when she received her life-saving liver transplant due to liver damage caused by primary sclerosing cholangitis and cholangiocarcinoma, a cancer of the ducts that drain bile from the liver. Jenifer, her co-worker, friend and running partner, was her living donor.
