The next time you take your child in for a well-child visit, you may notice something new. Your nurse or provider may take a minute or two to paint a fluoride varnish on their teeth. Dr. Valeria Cristiani, a Mayo Clinic pediatrician, will discuss fluoride varnish and oral health for children.

The mouth is part of the body and children that have good oral health are healthier overall. In many communities, access to dental care for children is a problem. Prevention works the best, and that's what well-child visits are trying to do by trying to prevent early childhood cavities.
