Integrative Medicine

I often get asked “what is Integrative Medicine?” ( The American Board of Integrative Medicine® (ABOIM) and the Consortium of Academic Health Centers for Integrative Medicine, defines Integrative Medicine as the practice of medicine that reaffirms the importance of the relationship between practitioner and patient, focuses on the whole person, is informed by evidence, and makes use of all appropriate therapeutic approaches, healthcare professionals, and disciplines to achieve optimal health and healing.

However, I often simply explain that with Integrative Medicine at Mayo Clinic (, we are expanding the potential therapeutic options.  Integrative Medicine considers interventions such as acupuncture, massage therapy, nutrition, health and wellness coaching, and mind-body medicine.  Although Integrative Medicine supports the body’s ability to heal, when cure is not an option, such as with EDS, its mission focuses on helping patients to better manage their symptoms, improve their overall health and lifestyle, and optimize their quality of life.
