As the calendar nears July, Independence Day and long summer days are on the horizon. These gatherings are fun opportunities to get out and celebrate summer with friends and family. To help people with dementia and their caregivers navigate the summer months, the Dementia Action Alliance drafted tips to make the summer festivities enjoyable and stress-free.
- Be open about your experiences, feelings, and needed accommodations. Use pen and paper, a recording device, or images to take note of what you would like to share with others.
- Learn more about the place you will be visiting—its quiet places, its comfort facilities, and its busiest times. Let those you are with know that you may need to leave if conditions change.
- Get lots of rest ahead of an event.
- Give yourself plenty of time to prepare for the day. As you gather your things, remember that summer weather can vary greatly throughout the day.
- Remember your earplugs
- Be kind to yourself, be confident, and have fun!
