If you are looking for a healthy breakfast, an "on the go" way to bring a snack or a meal along to appointments, or a creative way to change your eating habits, you may be interested in experimenting with smoothies. It can be a way to insert more fruits and vegetables into your diet. You may find some plant based protein powder to replace red meat for a day. Some cancer patients have a harder time eating because of taste changes, feeling nauseous or radiation to the neck area. Consuming enough calories to maintain their weight and preserve muscle mass can be challenging. Sipping on a smoothie can be a good way to supplement nutrition during the day.
Try any of these ingredients for a good base to your smoothie:
- milk
- almond milk
- soy milk
- coconut milk
- yogurt
Add fresh or frozen fruits and vegetables and blend away!

@meganroessler Hello Megan. I was just introduced to Smoothies last week, by my dentist, who advised me that Smoothies were available at my local store, where I get weekly delivery of my grocery needs. I live in a seniors' residence and so preparing my own Smoothies was difficult. I presently have a very sore mouth with sores on my tongue and inner cheeks. The dentist identified them as an autoimmune response, and since I'm presently being investigated for Crohns and mouth sores can be a symptom, it may be that is the cause. At any rate eating has been painful and difficult and the IBD contributes to my very limited diet. Unable to eat fruit and vegetables for months now, my nutrition level is very low. I can eat cooked carrots, cooked squash or the like, but living at the seniors' residence we're only offered what we're offered and although the meals are very good many of the choices are raw veggies and fruits. Long story short, I ordered a variety of Smoothies this week. I find I must use a plastic straw in order to avoid the beverage touching the painful parts of my tongue, but so far so good. I've also ordered a powdered green cappuccino flavored drink that my eldest son swears by.
Altogether, I'm hoping these additions to my formerly poor diet will see some positive changes to my health.
I was so happy to see your post on this subject, which reinforced my hope that trying Smoothies was a good way to go.

Forgot to mention, I'm presently battling Giant Cell Arteritis, had started on 3 days' I.V. Prednisone 1000 ml, with a year and a half of slowly weaning off, and now weekly injections of Actemra. Initially lost the vision in my right eye, as a presenting symptom. Much weakness and ill feeling on Prednisone, with the dreaded weight gain and moon face. Have so far lost the moon face and 19 lbs. and feeling quite a bit better now that I'm off Prednisone. Poor diet also accompanied all that period of time. Wish I'd been introduced to Smoothies then!
Great idea to get them from the store
Smoothies are helpful in getting you to take in unpleasant tasting foods that can be helpful.
On Mayo I follow a Grover's Disease, GD, site and learned about cilantro smoothies (made from fresh or frozen) being helpful in putting this chronic form of eczema into remission. Cilantro works as a heavy metal detox pulling out these metals. Mercury and other heavy metals have been linked to Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and Grover's Disease.
Your blood can be chelated to bind and remove the heavy metals that we collect as we age, yet that requires: medical professionals, discomfort and expense. Cilantro, about 1/2 bunch a day with stems and pieces, in a blender with your choice of ingredients like probiotic yogurt, fruit, veggies, almond milk, Stevia if sweetener is desired and or any other addition you prefer. I also like to add in collagen powder as it helps my hair and nails.
Do this for about 2-3 months daily and you will remove heavy metals.
This detox tonic has worked for almost 50% of us with GD, you can follow our blog looking into cilantro as a treatment beginning mid Feb or March in 2019. We are real people who were desperately seeking solutions for a disease that traditional eczema medicines do not help us with. GD is much like Shingles in how it feels and where it is located on the body.

I don't want to give you false hope if you already have Alzheimer's or Parkinson's that it will cure you or even help slow your progress once you have it. I am free of GD external rashes which itch and are extremely painful to this day.

My father was living in a wonderful senior residence that served good good meals with lots of cooked veggies, yet many days he simply wasn't interested in eating because his appetite was low and he had lost most of his sense of taste years earlier. He would never cook or prepare meals himself in his last few years. He had a cute small one bedroom apartment with kitchenette with small stove and refrigerator so he could have cooked his own meals or made his own smoothies from foods we would stock, yet that wasn't going to happen. He didn't mind opening a can of Ensure or a generic equivalent when eating at mealtime was a bother to him. We kept a case of these canned drink nutritional food supplements stocked in his room for him.
