In the United States, two-thirds of the population is said to be either overweight or obese. Mayo Clinic was one of the first institutions to offer a new option for those who might need medical help to lose weight but don’t qualify for weight loss surgery. In 2015, Mayo Clinic surgeons were the first in the U.S. to implant a device recently approved by the FDA. The procedure involves the temporary placement of a special balloon in the stomach and has the potential for lasting results.
