I had a “j-tube” installed into a segment of my small intestine, with the outlet being a 6+” tube that nightly I would connect to an IV bag that I would fill with a chocolatey-looking thick liquid that would be pumped into me via the j-tube. BTW, the liquid was my ONLY source of nutrition…and I was tempted to sample it on my finger! Bad, very bad idea. It was NOT intended for consumption by mouth. Horrible taste! The experience was a bit stressful. Before and after each use I had to flush the line. If ever any liquid stuck in the tube and dried, I was at serious risk of not getting my daily nutrition. That happened a few times, resulting in my being ambulanced to hospital to clear the clog. I lost 40 lbs during this period. That was OK, ‘cause I was overweight at the start. When the last container of nutritional supplement was completed, I consumed a quart of lemon sorbet by MOUTH as a celebration that I could return to normal food.

Thanks. Wish you the best, too. The best advice we came across was to have the surgery done at a hospital that performs a high volume of (minimally-invasive) esophagectomies. We connected with Dr. Shanda Blackmon at Mayo/Rochester MN. Very glad that we did.

Hello,
I have wondered about someone who recently had the esophagetomy. Is this the type of surgery where they removed the majority of esophagus and reconnect it to your stomach" I was not a candidate when first diagnoised due to scar tissue from a collaspe lung. Do you mind sharing if your wife's surgery was done through the neck or the chest, if either?

Hi. I had the surgery 2 years ago. They went in through my back and side. I also had a couple incisions in my chest and stomach. I'm still here, cancer free. I wish you well.

My surgery went well. No complications. Just had my 2 year anniversary and no sign of cancer. It's been a long haul with various issues but every day I get better. My surgeon said I have a very small chance of it coming back...he was really happy. I am carrying on with life and enjoying myself. Stay positive and everything will be fine. Have a nice day!
